Singer Etta James breathing on her own again (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Soul singer Etta James, who is terminally ill with leukemia, has been taken off a respirator and is breathing on her own again, her friend and manager said on Friday.

Lupe De Leon said the "At Last" singer, 73, is soon expected to leave the intensive care unit of a hospital near her home in Riverside, east of Los Angeles.

"The hospital is preparing Etta for release from ICU to a step down unit. She is stable and breathing on her own. Her blood pressure is normal," De Leon said.

James was admitted to the hospital last week because she was struggling to breathe. She has been in failing health for several years and suffers from leukemia, kidney disease and dementia but had previously been cared for at her Southern California home.

Her live-in doctor said earlier in December that James was considered terminally ill, and that she communicates mostly with nods and simple words. The three-time Grammy Award singer earlier battled obesity and was addicted to heroin for many years.

James was a key figure in the early days of R&B music with hit songs like "The Wallflower" and "Good Rockin' Daddy". But it was her 1961 recording of the ballad "At Last" that put her on the map.

Firefighters chase arson fires in Hollywood area (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? An arsonist swept through the Hollywood area under the cover of dark early Friday, torching vehicles whose flames ignited nearby houses, including one once occupied by Doors frontman Jim Morrison.

The four-hour onslaught started shortly after midnight and sent firefighters scrambling to douse fires in at least a dozen locations in Hollywood and the neighboring city of West Hollywood. In nearly every case, the fire started in a parked car. Authorities were preparing for possibly another round of fires, while searching for a suspect.

Dozens of people were rousted from their homes, power was disrupted in several neighborhoods and Los Angeles police were put on alert in the Hollywood area. One city firefighter was treated and released from a hospital after a fall from a ladder while battling one blaze. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities were interviewing witnesses and looking for any video footage that may have captured the person, or people, responsible for the spate of crimes. Investigators from four agencies met for a strategy session, while Los Angeles officials summoned investigators from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

We will "be preparing for what may be coming tonight," said Los Angeles County fire Battalion Chief Tom Sullivan.

Fire officials couldn't say whether the rash of fires was the work of a copycat. There was a series of other arson fires early Thursday, also in Hollywood. Two people have been arrested and remain in custody for those blazes, officials said.

All of the fires on Friday were in a 2-square mile area and most were in densely populated neighborhoods.

One of the homes was in Laurel Canyon, where Morrison and his girlfriend once lived, neighbors said. The winding road was the inspiration for the Doors' hit "Love Street," and the house was listed for nearly $1.2 million earlier this year, according to real estate website Zillow.com.

Sandy Gendel, who owns a nearby restaurant, said he heard explosions from what he later determined were likely car tires. He saw flames 30 feet high coming from the deck of the former Morrison house and a gutted Mazda Miata.

"It was just like a towering inferno," Gendel said.

Jeff Dorman, who lives in the neighborhood, said he and his wife were awakened by noise in the street.

As he and his neighbors watched the firefight, he said they worried about embers floating toward their houses because they are so close together. They also were concerned about a firebug being loose in their neighborhood.

"One spark could have been a huge problem," Dorman said. "The fire department did a fantastic job."

City Councilman Tom LaBonge said the arsonist is mostly targeting underground parking in mid-century type apartments that have no security gates and putting some kind of incendiary device under cars.

"These are not trash can fires on street corners. We are just a second away from tragedy," he said.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jaime Moore said car fires spread to adjacent buildings in at least three cases, and investigators were looking for patterns that might link the blazes.

Hollywood is served by the Los Angeles city police and fire departments. Adjacent West Hollywood is a separately incorporated city served by the Los Angeles County fire and sheriff's departments.

Globe-trotting turtle returns to sea after long rehab

A world-traveling sea turtle found stranded in the Netherlands is back home in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday after three long years of rest and rehabilitation.

The animal, an endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle, was found frigid and near-dead off the coast of the Netherlands in 2008, thousands of miles from the Gulf waters these turtles call home. It was dubbed Johnny Vasco de Gama by its European rescuers.

Marine biologists suspect Johnny became caught in cold currents and was "cold-stunned," a condition that shuts down internal organs and can kill sea turtles. Staff members of the Rotterdam Zoo stabilized the ailing turtle and sent him to the Ocean?rio de Lisboa aquarium in Portugal the following summer.

"He did just fine," Mote spokesman Hayley Rutger told LiveScience.

Johnny is fitted with a satellite tag that will help researchers keep an eye on his next amazing journey. Mote has tracked more than 120 sea turtles since 2005, according to Tony Tucker, the head of the laboratory's Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program.

Eating A Humble Pie Is Not The Answer, President Mills!

President Mills says he is ready to eat a humble pie. Trust the Ghanaian politician to seek refuge in stale metaphors as a face-saving manouevre to escape blame. Certainly, his plate of pies is full to the brim, the failed STX housing project being the latest.

I hope he has sharpened his teeth and braced his jaws well enough to bite deep into it. I wish him a good appetite, then.
The STX housing project to provide 30,000 houses for security agencies at $1.5 billion is doomed. And it doesn?t come as a surprise because the conditions for this doom had been laid at the very moment that the project was conceived. The government rushed through with it and disregarded well-intentioned suggestions to hasten slowly. Now, the reality it has refused to see is here, and feathers are being ruffled.

Even before anything concrete had been established to indicate that the project was viable, President Mills cut the sod in January 2011 for its commencement even before it was given Parliamentary approval in September 2011. Let?s remember that it began in the teeth of opposition by the Parliamentary Minority.

Despite the vitriolic protestations by other stakeholders such as the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), civil society groupings, and other identifiable pressure groups, the government held on stubbornly to its agenda and brought in the Koreans. Shrugging off this opposition, the government pressed on and created the impression that the STX project was a lifeline being thrown to the needy institutions. Now, the government seems to be wise only after the fact.

Considering the conflict of interest and the shoddiness with which it has handled this STX project, nothing exists anywhere to confirm that it will take off and be completed as Ghanaians have been made to believe. President Mills? government has recorded yet another bewildering failure.

Need we probe any further to know the factors responsible for this failure? I don?t think so. The factors are glaring?government?s incompetence and penchant for lying?which raises disturbing questions: Why should this project be adamantly pursued even when little groundwork had been done to ensure its success? How did the Ghanaian partners (led by Asamoah) get to be part of this project all of a sudden, given the fact that the company they represent hadn?t been known in the Ghanaian construction industry and came to notice just when this STX project was being initiated? Somebody being used as a front to make ill-gotten wealth by the very government officials who conceived this project?

No amount of remorse can solve the credibility problem created by this STX housing fiasco. Even though President Mills has conceded that he has been let down by developments militating against the project and asked Ghanaians not to lose hope yet, I am more than convinced that nothing can be done to undo the harm that this failure has already done. It is not just a matter of the government?s conceding that the STX project is a failure; it is a matter of recognizing the shoddy manner in which it has been handling national affairs and to do better.

Eating a humble pie won?t solve that problem either, contrary to what President Mills might be hinting at when he told an Accra-based radio station (Radio Gold) on Friday morning that his government would be the first to concede that the project has been a failure:
?Let me say that we?ve had problems with the STX; at the moment, we are trying to see how we can save that project; but I want to assure you that where we think that we can?t move forward we are prepared to eat humble pie and tell the whole world that this thing, you know, it's not what we thought it will be but we are trying to see what we can.?

This expression of remorse is an irritating gesture. National development efforts are not boosted by remorse. The STX fiasco is nothing but the culmination of the government?s shortsightedness, political mischief, and disdain for the people. It is the result of a beggar mentality nurtured by a vicious leadership flaw, incompetence, and plain immorality. In effect, the government is smeared already by this STX fiasco.

The project has failed because none in government is seriously committed to it. No government that does things this way deserves sympathy.

Apart from the huge sum involved, the fact that the project was to be executed by Koreans even though there were qualified Ghanaians to do so at a cheaper cost is enough to confirm that those who initiated this STX project had ulterior motives bordering on impropriety. In our peculiar Ghanaian context when the construction industry is fraught with the kickback syndrome, something must have undergirded the choice of the Koreans for this project. Were they brought in because they were considered to be more capable than Ghanaian real estate developers? Inconceivable. Could some proponents of this project have gone into overdrive in anticipation of lining their pockets with kickbacks? Possible.

We can tell from the controversy that has dogged this project right from its conception that the government failed to do diligent work before committing the country to that deal with the Koreans. So far, we don?t know the quantum of money spent on this still-born project (at least, in setting up offices and other administrative structures to manage it) but we can infer from goings-on that the country has already lost much in this deal. Someone has to be held accountable for this loss.

The failure of this STX project clearly demonstrates the vicious intransigence with which our leaders handle national affairs. It confirms apprehensions that our leaders are our main problem to solve. They can?t solve national problems. That is why the voters must use better reasons in choosing our leaders.
Now, to Alban Bagbin, who has turned out to be a big liar of the kind to be feared in national politics. He has adamantly defended the STX project and misled Ghanaians into believing that it was viable and would be executed without any hiccup. Having all along given the assurance that enough money had been sourced for it to take off, he has now back-tracked to say that the government was considering abandoning it.

The framework within which the STX project is placed is itself hideous. It is fraught with mistrust and a grievous appetite for personal gains. Right from scratch, opposition to this STX project indicated that Bagbin and all those directly connected with this project lack the moral capabilities to see it through. The government team, led by Albert Abongo, that negotiated the deal started off on the wrong footing, allowing themselves to be bribed with petty items by the Koreans. Having already sold their conscience for mere pottage, what else could they do but staunchly defend the project only to be humiliated by what we are now being told?
The collapse of this project is another confirmation of the shoddy manner in which President Mills and his government are handling national affairs. This level of shoddiness is disappointing and won?t justify any entreaties for the electorate to renew the government?s mandate.

Undoubtedly, with what has been happening all over the place, President Mills is likely to be down on his luck. He will find it difficult to persuade voters to retain his government in power because there is no firm assurance that it can do anything re-assuring or that it has the panacea for the country?s problems beyond 2012. What has happened for the past three years isn?t convincing enough that another four years will not be a painful repetition of the flim-flammery that has characterized his administration.

We are being blunt to say here that the foundation on which to build anything between 2012 and 2016 hasn?t been laid at all, which threatens the re-election bid. What has been happening to date is disappointing. That is why those in government claiming that President Mills? chances for 2012 are bright make me want to puke. What significant accomplishment is there to build on? How will the government prove to the electorate that it has already laid a solid foundation on which to build after the 2012 elections to warrant its mandate being renewed?

Even though we are quick to criticize former Presidents Rawlings and Kufuor, we can?t fail to acknowledge their accomplishments in their first term, which justified their clamour for a renewal of their mandate. And the electorate bought into that plea and retained them in office. What is the achievement on which President Mills can bank his hopes and point to as a justification for any appeal to the electorate to renew his mandate? Let nobody talk about infrastructural development because it is nothing new to enthuse over.

I want to tell President Mills that as he continues to preside over mediocrity in the governance of the country and fails to prevent laudable projects from collapsing, he is fast liquidating his own political fortunes. This STX project would have helped him claw back lost goodwill had it been approached seriously to improve housing conditions for the prospective beneficiaries. As the situation stands now, it is a big blow; and it won?t motivate this disappointed segment of the voter population to root for him. Another constituency lost!

President Mills has to take a huge chunk of the blame for all that has happened to make this STX project flop. He hasn?t been actively involved or serious enough to tackle the teething problems, leaving everything to Bagbin and the STX Korean and Ghanaian feuding parties to handle. That?s not how a President seeking re-election should act in a matter concerning such an important project.

Of course, this project has wide political ramifications and should have been pursued to conclusion and not abandoned this way to give his opponents the political capital that they?ve been hell-bent on grabbing out of this STX deal. Having looked on for this project to be checkmated by official incompetence, President Mills shouldn?t be surprised if the STX fiasco turns out to haunt him as he campaigns for votes. He has tall hurdles in front of him to jump in this last lap of the race toward Election 2012. With all these failures to contend with, what does he think will boost his chances for re-election?

Time for a Change

Next month there will be a vote on whether to fundamentally change the world's time standard. Why?
Coordinated universal time (UTC) is the time scale used all over the world for time coordination. It was established in 1972, based on atomic clocks, and was the successor of astronomical time, which is based on the Earth's rotation. But since the atomic time scale drifts from the astronomical one, 1-second steps were added whenever necessary. In 1972 everybody was happy with this decision. Today, most systems we use for telecommunications are not really happy with these "leap" seconds. So in January member states of the International Telecommunications Union will vote on dropping the leap second.

Iranian woman to face death by stoning or hanging (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Authorities in Iran said Sunday they are again moving ahead with plans to execute a woman sentenced to death by stoning on an adultery conviction in a case that sparked an international outcry, but are considering whether to carry out the punishment by hanging instead.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is already behind bars, serving a 10-year sentence on a separate conviction in the murder of her husband. Amid the international outrage her case generated, Iran in July 2010 suspended plans to carry out her death sentence on the adultery conviction.

On Sunday, a senior judiciary official said experts were studying whether the punishment of stoning could be changed to hanging.

"There is no haste. ... We are waiting to see whether we can carry out the execution of a person sentenced to stoning by hanging or not," said Malek Ajdar Sharifi, the head of justice department of East Azerbaijan province, where Ashtiani is jailed.

"As soon as the result (of the investigation) is obtained, we will carry out the sentence," he said, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

The charge of a married woman having an illicit relationship requires a punishment of stoning, he said.

He said judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani ordered a halt to stoning in order to allow Islamic experts to investigate whether the punishment can be altered in Ashtiani's case.

Ashtiani was convicted of adultery in 2006 after the murder of her husband.

She was later convicted of being an accessory to her husband's murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Attorney: Father of bound toddler shown on Facebook 'devastated'

By Josh Levs, CNN

updated 6:52 PM EST, Thu December 22, 2011

Andre Curry, 21, has been charged with aggravated domestic battery, Chicago police said.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: The toddler was being examined by a doctor Thursday
  • Andre Curry's attorney says he takes good care of the child
  • He allegedly posted a photo of his toddler daughter's mouth, arms, and legs bound with tape
  • He is charged with aggravated domestic battery

(CNN) -- A man who allegedly gagged and bound his toddler's arms and legs with tape and posted a photo of her on Facebook is "devastated by the situation," his attorney told CNN Thursday.

Andre Curry, 21, is charged with aggravated domestic battery, which is a felony, Chicago police said.

In court Wednesday, his bond was set at $100,000.

"It's our belief that after the investigation by the state and DCFS (the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services) is concluded, Andre Curry will be vindicated," said assistant public defender Anand Sundaram.

Curry has no history of child abuse and the girl has not shown injuries, Sundaram said, adding that the family is cooperating in the investigation.

The girl was being checked by a doctor Thursday for any injuries, whether old or new, he said.

With the photo "going viral on the Internet, things may have been blown out of proportion," Sundaram said.

Sundaram gave few details, saying he could not comment on specifics of the case.

The photo at issue shows the girl with painter's tape over her mouth and binding her wrists and ankles.

Above the photo on Curry's Facebook page were the words, "This is wut happens wen my baby hits me back. ;)"

The Facebook page appears to have been taken down. But the image was picked up by other websites. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office also told CNN that the caption was with the photo on Curry's Facebook page.

Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the state's attorney's office, told CNN Wednesday the girl in the photo is 22 months old.

"The photo itself does not tell the story of who our client is and how well he takes care of this child," said Sundaram.

He said his client will not face the felony charge if prosecutors cannot prove the girl suffered any injuries from the incident. If that's the case, he said, prosecutors could at most seek a charge of misdemeanor battery.

Conklin said the next court date will be December 27.

In the meantime, Curry remains behind bars. He would need to post $10,000 toward his bond to leave jail, Sundaram said.

Clooney, Keibler vacationing in Mexico again

George Clooney and Stacy Keibler are staying in Cabo San Lucas for a sun-drenched pre-Christmas break with friends including Cindy Crawford and her husband Randy Gerber.

The holiday comes less than a month after they spent Thanksgiving in Mexico with pals Alex Rodriguez, Cindy Crawford and Molly Sims and also celebrated Stacy's 32nd birthday in Cabo in October.

Although the couple are reportedly set to spend their first Christmas together with Stacy's parents, George recently revealed he is too dedicated to his career to have children and has no plans to ever marry again.

The 50-year-old star, who was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993, said: "I've always known fatherhood wasn't for me. Raising kids is a huge commitment and has to be your top priority. For me, that priority is my work. That's why I'll never get married again."

George also revealed he has no plans to dye his greying hair and is embracing it instead.

He said, "I hear all this talk about how grey I'm becoming, but I can't imagine ever dyeing my hair. My dad has a full head of white hair and I think it looks pretty good."

Toy wars: Wal-Mart, Target fight for parents' dollars

Jessica Rinaldi / Reuters

Target has been aggressively cutting prices on toys to lure shoppers, like this woman pulling two carts on Black Friday in Torrington, Conn.

By Martha C. White

Selling toys during the holidays is hardly child's play. It's a bare-knuckle brawl between big-box behemoths.

"Price competition is always aggressive between the big retailers each holiday season, particularly in toys," Will Coleburn, senior vice president at manufacturer Toy State International, Inc., said via email. "This year they all were much more aggressive."?

According to a Goldman Sachs report, Target slashed prices on a "basket" of hot toys, undercutting Wal-Mart by nearly 19 percent. Toys like Hasbro's Sesame Street Let's Rock Elmo, which has a "regular" price of $60, is selling?for less than $20 in the final days leading up to Christmas. It's a bonanza for shoppers, but some analysts worry all those cut-rate Elmos ? and My Little Ponies, Mario Karts and Pokemons ? will cut into profits.?

Wal-Mart's heavily touted layaway plan, which it started advertising even before Black Friday, gave it an early edge in the category, thanks to shoppers who can't or won't put their holiday purchases on credit cards. "It was one of those categories Wal-Mart had talked about not being beaten in," said Joseph Feldman, senior retail analyst at Telsey Advisory Group.?

Target's increasingly steeper price cuts after Black Friday challenged Wal-Mart's initial lead, but Feldman said it's not a risk-free tactic. "From a profit standpoint we wont be surprised if we see a hit to profitability," he said.

"[Target] is getting aggressive and promotional, and it will prove difficult to maintain market share and gross margin," Janney Capital Markets analyst David Strasser said in a recent research note. "It?s clearly not a coincidence that (Target)?introduced money losing sales Friday Dec. 16th and Saturday the 17th. This coincides with (Wal-Mart's)?deadline on layaway and the last payday before the holiday."?

"Target's philosophy is, the only way we're going to capture revenue is by getting them through the front door," said?Richard Feinberg, a professor in Purdue University's department of consumer sciences and retailing. "Whatever gets them through the front door, we have a high probability that they're going to spend additional money."

Hot toys, even if the store has to take a loss on them, function as effective holiday-season loss leaders. Wal-Mart, which has been losing business from lower-income customers to dollar stores, got a multiplier effect from its layaway program: Customers have to return to the store at least once and possibly more often to make payments on their items.?

Target also has a couple of tactics to mitigate the money it's losing by heavily discounting popular toys. Price cuts have been coupled with $10 Target gift cards on some purchases. Gift cards virtually guarantee a return visit, and customers are likely to dig into their own wallets to augment the "free money." Target also offers 5 percent off purchases for customers who have its store-branded credit card. At around 23 percent interest, cardholders who revolve a balance will return that 5 percent and then some to Target. Doling out extra discounts to cardholders also helps Target attract the spending power of higher-income shoppers.

As attractive as these last-minute price cuts are, though, shoppers might not be able to score them because many hot toys are sold out. Another must-have toy this season, Leap Frog's Leap Pad Explorer, is sold out on both the Wal-Mart and Target websites, and parenting blogs boil over with rumors and tips about where to score one. This pre-iPad for kids aged 4 to 9 never dropped below $99 at major toy sellers, although Target cardholders could at least count on a 5 percent discount. According to Goldman Sachs' tally, out-of-stock items accounted for 68 percent of the toy basket at Target and 60 percent at Wal-Mart.

"Inventory management has become increasingly important for the retailer," said Coleburn. He added that it's also become more challenging because shoppers tend to hold out until the last minute to see if prices will drop, which makes it hard to forecast demand.

"Their whole goal is to sell everything as quickly as possible," said Feinberg. "They've gotten so good they'd rather sell out than have to deal with it after Christmas and have another wave of discounting."

Master Manipulators of the Micro-world

Parasites are perhaps the greatest master manipulators out there in nature. Even though they are tiny, their numbers are mighty and they have a huge impact on individuals and even entire ecosystems. For a parasite the primary objective is to increase its numbers and successfully manipulate its host to help it accomplish this goal. One of the easiest ways to do this is to induce changes that increase transmission of the parasite between hosts. In this sense, the manipulation can be thought of as a characteristic of some parasites and, unbeknownst to the host, the end result can be some very odd behaviors indeed.

When it comes to fear of new objects it is well known that wild rats are among the most neophobic creatures around. They stay away from things that are unfamiliar, including novel food sources. This tendency for extreme caution is helpful when it comes to surviving out there in the big bad world. As you may have noticed there is no shortage of rats, at least not of the usual variety. You might be inclined to believe that predators and people are the biggest threat to rats. In one sense this is accurate, but a far more insidious danger lurks in water sources that may be tainted with a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii.

Many people are familiar with this little protozoan because of the risk to pregnant women. Cats are the principal host for this parasite because it can only reproduce in the gut of a cat, but there are many suitable intermediate mammal hosts, including humans and rats. This parasite is one of the most ubiquitous, with infection rates ranging from 38-70% of animals such as bears, deer, domestic chickens, cattle, sheep, sea otters, and rabbits-to name a few. The easiest way to catch it is by consuming undercooked meat. This is how cats usually acquire the infection; from the mice or birds they catch and eat.

It is thought that one of the reasons this protozoan is so successful may be related to the unusual changes in behavior that are induced in the host, particularly intermediate hosts. This has been well studied in mice and rats. If you recall, rats are some of the wariest mammals out there- a fact that contributes to their success. Once they are infected with toxoplasmosis, however, they lose their fear, and not just of novel objects or food. They specifically lose their fear of cats!

Researchers tested laboratory rats for their aversion to cat odor and compared individuals that were infected with those that were not. Despite many generations of not being exposed to cats, uninfected rats had a strong aversion to cat odor. Not only did some infected rats show reduced aversion to cat odors, some actually preferred the smell of cats! Essentially, being infected with toxoplasmosis can make some rats suicidal, in that they want to be close to a dangerous predator.

This mind-bending, fatal-attraction manipulation only affects their fear of cats and doesn?t seem to alter any other behaviors in rats-except perhaps that female rats seem to find infected males more attractive. The precision of the parasite to change the behavior of rats has to do with brain lesions centered on the amygdala, which you can think of as the fear center of the brain. It is possible that we, as humans, may also be behaviorally affected by infection. Though inconclusive, some researchers suspect infected females are more attractive to men and are more sociable. There is also some evidence that both men and women infected with toxoplasmosis reduce novelty-seeking behavior (the opposite of rats) and have reduced reaction times, leading to a higher incidence of motor-vehicle accidents.

More recently, a far more unpleasant psychological side effect may be linked with infection: schizophrenia. Toxoplasmosis infection in humans has an impact on dopamine levels in the brain and dopamine imbalance is also associated with the development of schizophrenia. Whether or not this is the definitive mechanism, there is a correlation between toxoplasmosis infection in humans and schizophrenia that one day may provide new treatment options for this debilitating disorder.

You might be inclined to think this is extreme, but toxoplasmosis infection is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to behavioral manipulation. For instance, in crickets and grasshoppers there is a little worm that causes them to behave very strangely indeed. This modest worm, a hairworm, lives as a youngster inside arthropods (insects, spiders, etc.), but is free-living as an adult in rivers, lakes, and streams. They reproduce in water environments, but develop inside non-aquatic invertebrates. This sets up a conundrum: how to transition from one environment to the other without, um, dying? It seems the clever solution that they have come up with is to make their non-water seeking insect host suddenly look for water and dive right in.

Of course! Problem for the insect is that it doesn?t swim, so this is rather detrimental to the host. As with Toxoplasma gondii, adult hairworms so precisely manipulate the behavior of their host that suddenly, one night, out of the blue, it is all the cricket or grasshopper can do to stay away from water. Naturally this is beneficial, and really vital, for the hairworm to survive and guarantee it?s life cycle will continue. One study looking at protein expression in both the grasshopper and the hairworm revealed that proteins in the grasshopper?s central nervous system were expressed more when it was seeking water, suggesting manipulation down to the level of proteins!

Things get stranger and stranger as we look at moths, gypsy moths in particular. This is really the stuff of nightmares and science fiction. Imagine an evil virus laughing sadistically in the background. Like butterflies, moths go through several stages of development. The first stage is as an egg placed on the underside of a host plant leaf. Gypsy moths are a little less particular. They will lay their eggs on tree trunks, tree branches, anywhere that provides the tiniest bit of shelter.

The eggs are laid in clusters and the larvae hatch in the spring. Once they hatch the larvae go through several stages, molting (shedding their outer covering) as they grow. This larval stage is what we know as caterpillars. When they are ready to pupate it can take several days to two weeks. This wonderful process is rudely interrupted for those individuals unfortunate enough to catch a virus. A baculovirus, to be exact.

Moth larvae infected with this type of virus become like zombies on a mission to climb and climb to the treetops. This phenomenon is well known and was described in silk worms as wilting disease. Another phrase ?Wipfelkrankeit?, or tree top disease has also been used. Why are they induced to perform this odd behavior? Apparently they climb to the tops of the trees just before they die and begin to liquefy. Yes, you read that correctly, liquefy. The end result: excellent dispersal for the virus by raining down on the unfortunate caterpillars below. In the ?liquid? of the infected, now deceased, caterpillar, are millions and millions of virus particles.

I suppose it is rather like an awful sneeze. When we sneeze we disperse the virus through the air. When the caterpillars liquefy they disperse the virus downward. As it turns out, there is a single gene in the virus that halts the molting process and causes them to move into the treetops in broad daylight (unwise behavior for tasty caterpillars). How does a gene in the virus accomplish this? The gene produces an enzyme that stops the molting process of the caterpillar. Unlike the protozoan that caused brain lesions in rats, or the worm that affected protein expression in crickets, here we have a situation where a gene in one species affects the physiology and behavior of another species.

Can it get weirder? Oh yes, yes indeed. Fungi that turn ants into zombies and give them ?lockjaw?? caused by Ophiocordyceps fungi. The first step in the manipulation is to get the ant to leave the nest. The second step is to make the ant climb up something, a blade of grass will do nicely thank you very much. The third step is to make the ant bite down and never let go. The ant dies, the fungus emerges out of the brain of the ant and is dispersed. Score one fungus, score zero ant.

It really is worse than that. The fungal spores enter into the ant when it breathes. At some point, when the fungus is ready to produce spores (think baby fungi) it migrates to the brain of the ant. It grows and this causes the ant to behave in a way uncharacteristic for the ant (you think?). At some point when the ant climbs and bites down on plant tissue the muscles of the mandible (jaw) atrophy meaning the ant cannot undo the bite. The fungus then eats the ant?s brain before sprouting out from its head and sending its spores out into the world to find more ants.

The fungus can only reproduce after it makes this kind of stalk that comes out of the back of the ants head and it needs to get the ant outside of the nest because other ants will remove dead pals quickly. Here is how precisely the ants can be manipulated to eat. It seems they can be induced to bite into leaves all around the same time: noon, and facing a similar direction: NNW. Go figure. Researchers have not quite figured out why the ants need to bite down around noon or face in this peculiar direction.

From other species of ants that, when infected with the larvae of a liver fluke, saunter outside at night biting onto a blade of grass in the hopes that a sheep will come along and consume them, to snails that are induced to wiggle and jiggle their tentacles in order to attract birds so they can be eaten, these microscopic critters are some of the most successful manipulators around. Lest you believe we, as humans, are immune to being influenced by these mini-masters of the biological world, think again. Toxoplasma induced behavioral changes may just be the start of unraveling the effects of parasites, bacteria, and viruses on human behavior. As we uncover more parasite driven effects, we may very well start to wonder: Are we really who we think we are?

Sweden honors centenary of WWII hero Wallenberg (AP)

STOCKHOLM ? Sweden will commemorate the centenary of the birth of Raoul Wallenberg in 2012 with a new series of postage stamps and a touring exhibition about the World War II hero credited with rescuing tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews.

Organizers on Tuesday presented a photo exhibition about Wallenberg in Stockholm that next year will travel to Hungary, Germany, Russia, Israel, the U.S. and Canada.

They also revealed two new stamps portraying Wallenberg that will go on sale in Sweden in May.

The Swedish diplomat's fate has remained one of the great mysteries of WWII. He disappeared after being arrested by the Soviet army in Budapest in January 1945. The Soviets claimed Wallenberg was executed in 1947 but never produced a reliable death certificate or his remains.
