Quit Playing Around With Your Game Console - Houzz

Nintendo has announced plans to ship its next-generation game system, called the Wii U (pronounced "we, you") on November 18, 2012.

The Wii U should be a fantastic gaming platform ? and an unusual one. Unlike the current Wii, which is operated by a motion-detecting controller that looks like a TV remote, the new Wii U will feature a controller with buttons and a touch screen. The handheld touch screen can be used for controlling what's on the TV. But it can also be used instead of the TV screen. So the Wii U will be a full gaming console and a somewhat portable gaming unit all in one.

Wii U owners can become members of an upcoming Nintendo Network, through which Nintendo will maintain an app store (which Nintendo is calling an eShop) for downloading all kinds of software that will work with the gaming system.

In addition to all the usual stuff you'd find in a controller ? gyroscope, accelerometer, haptic feedback and so on ? the Wii U controller will have a built-in microphone, speakers and camera, as well as electronics that will enable you to use a wireless credit card to make purchases. It will also support stylus input, so you should be able to sign things and draw pictures.

It's this combination of controller capabilities and an eShop that makes the Wii U so full of promise for non-gaming applications. The gaming system will probably enable the control of your existing TV and movies using the touch screen and buttons on the controller. While watching TV, for example, you should be able to move the show to the controller and take it with you all around the house.

You can also expect a lot of online shopping applications, where you can quickly scan through products and buy by tapping your credit card on top of the controller to make the purchase. And finally, it's almost certain that the Wii U will be able to replace your telephone, functioning as a speakerphone for online calls and a videoconferencing system at the touch of a button.

Recipe: Yachae Kalguksu (Korean Knife Noodles with Vegetables ...

2012_10_24-kalguksu1.jpg Trying to reproduce a beloved relative's signature dish is often futile, especially when recipes are unrecorded and our dear ones are no longer with us. In this case, I was inspired by my father-in-law's kalguksu, or Korean "knife noodles," despite the fact that I sadly never got to meet him nor taste the noodles that my partner remembers so fondly. While my version could never match the original, I think I can safely say these noodles are a fabulous comfort food.

2012_10_24-kalguksu2.jpgMy partner Gregory's father passed away before we met, but I know I would have adored him. Some of my favorite stories involve his love of food, and for over a decade Gregory has reminisced about his dad's handmade noodles. Kalguksu literally means "knife noodles" in Korean, and these knife-cut wheat noodles are typically served in a broth, although there are dozens and dozens of variations with different meat, seafood, and vegetables.

I'm not sure what took us so long, but recently we decided it was time to try and recreate this famed dish. Between Gregory's fuzzy memory of the particulars of the broth and my vegetarianism, what we ended up with was not exactly like his dad's. But the soft, chewy noodles and the garlicky-gingery flavors in the broth met with Gregory's approval. As for me, I gained a new go-to comfort food.

Despite being handmade, the noodles are really quite easy to make. No pulling is necessary; you just roll up the dough and cut it with a knife. Use a generous amount of flour to ensure they don't stick. Some people blanch the noodles separate from the broth, and you can do that if you prefer a more clear soup. However, Gregory remembered his father's version being more thick, so I simply cooked the floury noodles in the same pot. The garnishes ? green onions, ground sesame seeds, Korean red pepper flakes ? are essential, and if you like, you can spice it up even more with a swirl of yangnyeomjang, or korean seasoning sauce.

2012_10_24-kalguksu3.jpg

Yachae Kalguksu (Korean Knife Noodles with Vegetables)

Serves 4

For the noodles:
1 1/2 cups flour, plus more for dusting
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup cold water

For the soup:
2 quarts vegetable stock (can substitute chicken stock)
1/2 onion, sliced
2 scallions
6 cloves garlic, peeled
2-inch knob of ginger, peeled and thickly sliced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 medium potato, peeled and cut into half-circles
1 medium Korean zucchini (hobak) or 1 regular zucchini, cut into half-circles

For the garnish:
1-2 scallions, green part only, sliced
1 teaspoon roasted sesame seeds, coarsely ground
1/4 teaspoon gochugaru
About 2 tablespoons yangnyeomjang - korean seasoning sauce (optional)

Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the oil and work it in with your fingers. Make a well in the center, add the water, and stir to form a soft dough.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and firm. Cover the ball of dough with the bowl or plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, bring the vegetable stock to a boil. Add the onion, scallions, garlic, ginger, salt, and potato. Reduce heat to a simmer and cover the pot.

On a well-floured surface, roll the dough to about 2mm thick. Rub both sides with flour and fold it 4-5 times to make it easier to cut. Using a knife, cut it into strips about 1/4 inch wide. Gently toss the noodles with flour to separate the strands and prevent them from sticking together.

Taste the soup and season with additional salt, if necessary. Add the zucchini to the pot and simmer until tender. Then add the noodles and simmer a couple minutes until tender.

Serve garnished with scallions, sesame seeds, and gochugaru. If serving with yangnyeomjang, place it on the side so diners can add to taste.

Self-powered sensors to monitor nuclear fuel rod status

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Japan's Fukushima Dai'ichi nuclear disaster that occurred in 2011 -- a result of the strongest earthquake on record in the country and the powerful tsunami waves it triggered -- underscored the need for a method to monitor the status of nuclear fuel rods that doesn't rely on electrical power.

During the disaster, the electrical power connection to the nuclear reactor failed and rendered back-up electrical generators, coolant pumps, and sensor systems useless. The nuclear plant's operators were unable to monitor the fuel rods in the reactor and spent fuel in the storage ponds.

To address this issue, Penn State researchers teamed with the Idaho National Laboratory to create a self-powered sensor capable of harnessing heat from nuclear reactors' harsh operating environments to transmit data without electronic networks. The team will present their research at the Acoustical Society of America's upcoming 164th Meeting, October 22-26, 2012, in Kansas City, Missouri.

"Thermoacoustics exploits the interaction between heat and sound waves," explains Randall A. Ali, a graduate student studying acoustics at Penn State. "Thermoacoustic sensors can operate without moving parts and don't require external power if a heat source, such as fuel in a nuclear reactor, is available."

Thermoacoustic engines can be created from a closed cylindrical tube -- even a fuel rod -- and a passive structure called a "stack."

"We used stacks made from a ceramic material with a regular array of parallel pores that's manufactured as the substrate for catalytic converters found in many automotive exhaust systems. These stacks facilitate the transfer of heat to the gas in a resonator, and heat is converted to sound when there's a temperature difference along the stack," Ali elaborates.

When a thermoacoustic engine operates, an acoustically driven streaming gas jet circulates hot fluid away from the heat source -- nuclear fuel -- and along the walls of the engine and into the surrounding cooling fluid.

Penn State and Idaho National Laboratory are also investigating using thermoacoustic sound to monitor microstructural changes in nuclear fuel, measure gas mixture composition, and to act as a failsafe device in emergency situations.

Google Stoops to a New Low! | Internet Marketing Secrets, Affiliate ...

Google Stoops to a New Low!

I must say when I saw what I?m about to show you in this post I had to check it twice as I didn?t quite believe what I was seeing at first, but sure enough Google has stooped to a new low today in their never quenching thirst for more profit. I can?t confirm that this has been rolled out across the world, but it is happening where I live in New Zealand anyway.

Before I show you this I first want to lay down a little background. We all know that Google makes their money when people click their ads listed on a Google results pages and on other websites that are opting into the Adsense program. So obviously Google?s agenda is to get as many of these ads clicked as possible.

However stop for just a moment and remember what Google is useful for and why it has become such a popular tool for people to use in the first place. Google is a search engine, not a giant advertising billboard, let?s get that straight to start with. People use Google as a gateway to the internet, and Google is supposed to be showing a list of the most relevant websites related to a user?s search queries.

This all sounds well and good, what a great service, Google makes it easy for us to find websites right?well sort of, but over the years Google has taken advantage of their popularity and slowly but surely are moving towards being one giant advertising billboard and that?s it!!

What Happened to the Organic Listing?

Yes the organic listings, the websites that Google lists that DO NOT pay Google to be there. The ones that do SEO (search engine optimization) and get ranked on the front page of Google, what did happen to them? The way Google is going you might have to scroll to page 3 to find an organic listing soon.

Let?s take a look at a typical Google results page below that I see when I search in Google, so you can see where I?m going with this. This might not be the same for you, as possible Google is testing this out in some countries, New Zealand where I live being the perfect test place.

So you can see from that image that above the fold of the page now 95% of the real estate is taken up by NON ORGANIC listings. Google has now added an extra listing for ?Searches related to KEYWORD? just below where the Google Ads finish, thus pushing the organic results even further down the page.

When people click on these related results, it will load a new Google page which will of course show more Google Ads, and give Google another chance to get them clicked. This is just another aggressive trick from Google to stop people from visiting websites that are not Ads.

This is not the first time they have done dirty tricks like this, in fact Google is slowly but surely doing more and more of these cunning techniques. Don?t believe me? Well think back to 12 months ago when the background color of ALL ADS where a pink color that was obvious, so searches knew if they were clicking on an ad. Well Google went from obvious pink to a light pink that was hard to distinguish without tilting your screen, to now being WHITE so you can?t tell at all!

But there?s more, Google use to make it very obvious what listings were ads by telling you, as they were say ?Ads by Google?, but I guess that was being too helpful so now they just have the words ?Ads? and I wouldn?t be surprized if they remove even that soon.

What amazes me is that the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) comes down on affiliate sites who don?t make it obvious that they make a commission from links on their sites, but they let Google continue down this aggressive and somewhat deceptive path of advertising.

Do No Evil?.As Google Do Plenty For Us All

I get sick and tired of listening to garbage from Matt Cutts at Google telling us all to be transparent and put up QUALITY sites for the user experience when I see Google turn around and pull moves like this latest stunt.

One of Google Panda?s penalties was for sites that have too much advertising above the fold!!!!!! Can you see the irony in this, when a Google results page is essentially nothing more than one giant ad, as they push the organic results below the fold.

Google?s motto is ?do no evil? yeah right, you have to be kidding me, Google is shown quite clearly that they have no interest in helping people find the best website that meets their search query and instead want to show you the results that make them the most money.

Summary

I hope this latest move by Google annoys you as much as it has me. I would love to hear from you all below in the comments. However like I said Google might not have rolled this out globally yet, so you might not see it when you use Google, but I can assure you that it is there when I use Google, so something is going on.

Restored 1955 La Salle II to debut at Amelia Island | Hemmings Blog ...

Back in 1988, the Warhoops Salvage Yard, located in Sterling Heights, Michigan, became the center of the automotive world when it was announced that four prototype/dream cars from the famed GM Motorama displays of the mid-Fifties had been discovered at the facility. Long thought to have been destroyed in 1958, the Chevrolet Biscayne, La Salle II roadster, La Salle II sedan and Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Town Car somehow remained out of the public eye ? yet almost right under its nose ? for 30 years.

That?s not to say they remained in good condition, or even in one piece. The Biscayne and the La Salle II roadster had been cut into pieces; in fact the former was on top of the latter in the yard, and after concept car collector Joe Bortz liberated them all from Warhoops, it took several return trips to excavate the missing pieces of the cars. Bortz reassembled both the Biscayne and La Salle II roadster for the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance, and while the former has since been restored, the La Salle II roadster only recently emerged from restorer Marty Martino?s Martino Coachworks in Gum Springs, Virginia.

The La Salle II roadster does feature one significant departure from its original configuration. GM specified an aluminum block, double overhead-camshaft, fuel-injected V-6 for the roadster and while its engineers did indeed build the engine and install it in the roadster for the Motorama shows, they never got it running. While the non-functional engine remains with the roadster, Bortz decided to convert the car to electric power, enabling it to drive on and off concours greens. Bortz has put together a couple videos with more photos of the roadster and information on its restoration.

The restored La Salle II roadster will make its public debut the weekend of March 8-10 at the Amelia Island Concours d?Elegance, where the La Salle II sedan will also be on display. For more information on the concours, visit AmeliaConcours.org

Like girls, U.S. boys may be hitting puberty earlier

NEW YORK | Sat Oct 20, 2012 10:37am EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Boys in the United States may be entering puberty earlier than in generations past, a new study has found, suggesting it's not just girls who are developing at younger ages.

In comparisons with decades-old data, boys who were seen for well-child visits between 2005 and 2010 were maturing six months to two years sooner, based on their genital development.

The finding is significant for researchers seeking to understand why the age of puberty may be creeping down.

The discovery is also important for parents, who have to know how and when to discuss changing bodies with their children, according to the lead author of the study published online Saturday by the journal Pediatrics.

For the full study, see bit.ly/jsoh2P

"They need to talk to their boys earlier than they would have thought about puberty and sexual development and all of those related issues," said Marcia Herman-Giddens at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Recent studies from the United States and elsewhere have shown that girls are maturing at a younger age, with many starting to develop breasts as early as age 7 or 8.

Doctors haven't necessarily thought the same early puberty trend applied to boys. Some doctors blame estrogen-like chemicals in the environment for girls' earlier development. Those same chemicals would be expected to delay sexual maturation in boys.

But even if boys are developing earlier than in the past, that doesn't mean they are more mature socially and psychologically at younger ages, researchers said.

"Now there's probably a bigger disparity between their physical maturation and their psychosocial maturation," said Dr. Frank Biro, head of adolescent medicine at Cincinnati Children's Medical Center, who wasn't involved in the new analysis.

"People are going to interact with them like they're older," he told Reuters Health.

CHANGE MAY NOT BE HEALTHY

Data for the new study came from 144 U.S. pediatric practices and included 4,131 boys age 6 to 16.

Based on the so-called Tanner stages of development - a technique doctors use to measure how far along in puberty a young person is - genital changes in boys started around the age of 9 or 10, and pubic hair appeared between age 10 and 11 1/2, on average.

Testicle size hit a common measure for the start of puberty just before age 10 and full sexual maturity happened at 15 to 16.

In general, African-American boys developed earlier than their white and Hispanic peers, Herman-Giddens and her colleagues reported.

A study from the 1950s through 1970s of white boys in England - for which the Tanner scale is named - found boys started genital development at age 11.6, on average. Other data through the 1970s also put the start of genital changes between age 11 and 12, and pubic hair development typically between 12 and 13 - about two years later than in the new study.

Despite strong evidence showing girls are developing breasts and getting their periods at younger and younger ages, Herman-Giddens said it is still not clear why boys may also be hitting puberty sooner than in years past. One possible explanation is high rates of obesity, which alters the body's hormone levels.

"The reasons it is happening may not be healthy," she told Reuters Health.

The new study wasn't designed to be representative of what is happening across the country. Biro said he thinks puberty is indeed coming earlier in U.S. boys in general, though other researchers may not agree.

Regardless of general trends, it is important for parents to pay attention to their own child's development, researchers said, and to know when to start talking to them about sexual activity, he said.

"Parents need to monitor both their daughters and their sons a little more closely than they would have before," Biro said.

STOCKTON - The Sikh community came from near and far this weekend to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Stockton Gurdwara - a temple on South Grant Street that holds special meaning, because it represents the first permanent Sikh settlement in the United States.

A weekend of events, including the reading of a state resolution honoring the centennial, culminated Sunday with a colorful parade through downtown Stockton.

Attended by a throng of thousands, the stop-and-go parade was punctuated by martial arts demonstrations, live music and a veritable rolling potluck of sorts.

"We were just standing here watching the parade, and a guy walked up with a crate and handed us this," Brian Debem of Stockton said as he dug a plastic fork into a plate of fruit. "It's kind of like a fruit cocktail, but its not sweet, it's spicy."

And there were plenty more opportunities to sample all kinds of dishes and beverages along the parade route. Not surprising, because the temple was specifically built to offer food and drink to those in need.

"; aryZooms[imgCounter] = "javascript: NewWindow(870,625,window.document.location+'?Template=photos&img="+imgCounter+"')";

There were offerings of stew, baked goods, candy, tea, and from the back of pickups, young men handed out cans of soda, bottled water and other drinks.

Periodically, the parade stopped and participants gathered in a circle to watch performers engage in martial arts demonstrations.

Taranpreet Singh, 13, said the weekend was an important religious event in the Sikh community in which he was proud to participate with so many others.

"We used to fight like this to protect our people," he explained. "But now, our martial arts is considered an art form."

He and his friends wore white tunics with bright orange sashes tied around their waists and wielded long batons as they performed.

iPhylo: Mapping evolutionary biology: @evoldir and #ProjectEvoMap

Robert M. Griffin (@GriffinEvo) has launched ProjectEvoMap. Rob explains:
I have decided this week to try to create a resource where evolutionary
biologists can find info on labs and groups from all around the world. I
have created a collaborative Google map online which evolutionary biology
research groups can pin their labs to with a brief description of their
interests. Others can then browse the map to look for labs in specific
areas ? for example, if someone wants to find suitable labs in their
current country for work they can see all the labs in that area, likewise
anyone looking for work in a specific region or who needs access to labs
while on fieldwork can look for nearby groups which may be able to help.

Below is a screen shot of part of the map. If you're working on evolutionary biology now is your chance to literally put your lab on the map.

In parallel I'm experimenting with adding a map to the venerable EvolDir mailing list, for which I run a twitter stream (@evoldir). Using some terribly crude code to extract what looks like an address from EvolDir posts, then calling Google's Geocoding API results in a map of recent posts. You can see the live map at http://bioguid.info/services/evoldir/. This service compliments Rob's by giving a sense of current activity in the community (e.g., conferences, courses, jobs).

Deadly meningitis outbreak leads to legal battles ? RT

A security guard looks out from the front doors of pharmaceutical compounding company NECC, a producer of the steroid methylprednisolone acetate, in Framingham, Massachusetts(Reuters / Jessica Rinaldi)

A woman who may be infected with the deadly meningitis that has so far sickened 170 people has filed a lawsuit against the pharmacy that made the tainted steroid shot she received.

The woman, Minnesota resident Babe Puro, is among 14,000 patients who was administered a potentially tainted steroid injection to relieve back pain. She received the injection September 17 at a clinic in Shakopee. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in a Minnesota federal court, is the first filed against the New England Compounding Center (NECC) since the start of the meningitis outbreak.

?After receiving the injections plaintiff suffered headaches and nausea for approximately a week,? the lawsuit states. It also calls the steroid shot ?fungus contaminated? and ?dangerous and unfit for use.?

The woman underwent a spinal tap to test for the illness over the weekend, but doctors had not yet concluded whether or not the woman has acquired meningitis.

The lawsuit seeks compensation for damages from the company for both Puno?s injuries, as well as others who suffered after receiving the tainted medication in Minnesota.

?People have to be proactive and take care of themselves,? Puro?s attorney Jeff Montpeti, told the Associated Press. ?Before these death toll numbers go any higher, people need to get checked.?

To date, 185 people have contracted the fungus and 14 have died. Tennessee has seen the most cases, with 50 infections and six deaths. In one week, the case count has surged from 35 to 185, since symptoms take several weeks to appear after exposure to the fungus.

Senator Richard Blumenthal has publicly demanded a criminal probe of the NECC, which has recalled the steroids and suspended its operating license.

Compounding pharmacies have also come under increased scrutiny. Compounders use drug ingredients to mix medications themselves. The custom drug mixes are often cheaper than prepackaged versions ? but come with higher risks of being tainted by bacteria like meningitis. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no control over compounding pharmacies.

Over the past 11 years, the FDA has sent about 40 warning letters to such pharmacies for sanitary violations and for inadequate efforts in preventing the sale of dangerous of ineffective drugs, USA TODAY reported.

Of 14,000 at risk of meningitis, medical practitioners are still trying to reach about 2,000 of them, Reuters reported.

?We are not out of the woods yet,? Dr. Todd Weber, manager of the Center for Disease Control response to the outbreak, said Thursday in a briefing.

Symptoms can appear as long as 42 days after exposure to the disease, leaving plenty of time for those injected with the tainted steroid in September to still acquire symptoms.

7 Simple Mistakes That May Be Killing Your Blog - web design ...

Blogs are becoming increasingly important for the success of a business online. Today, blogging forms an integral part of any successful Internet marketing strategy. The recent changes to Google algorithm have further made it essential for businesses to focus on content creation as a way to obtain links and improve their search engine ranking. Blogging is one of the best ways to do this.

However, blogging takes time and effort, and not all blogs succeed. In this post, we take a look at 7 common blogging mistakes that may prevent you to achieve the desired results with blogging. Addressing these mistakes is a good way to succeed in blogging and get the desired results.

1. Trying to Cover Too Many Topics

Trying to cover too many topics or going off topic is a very common mistake bloggers make. This has several disadvantages. It dilutes the global keyword density of your blog, making it difficult to become authoritative or rank favourably on search engines for desired keywords. It also makes it difficult to attract a targeted audience or establish your authority.

Targeting a micro niche makes it easier to carve a market for yourself and build a targeted following. You can always diversify and expand your topics in future either on the same blog or by setting up additional niche blogs.

2. Not Posting Regularly

Most of the blogs start out well but fail to maintain momentum after a while. This is one of the biggest mistakes in blogging and can seal the fate of your blog. It is generally recommended to post at least 3 times a week if you want your blog to be successful. However, I would recommend on posting daily if possible. Studies have found a direct relationship between customer acquisition and blogging frequency. See the results of one such study below.

Blogging Mistake -Poor Frequency

3. Lack of Adequate Promotion

Lack of adequate promotion is another common mistake made by bloggers. Thousands of new blogs are launched every week but very few succeed. You can have an excellent blog with informative content, but if users are not able to find it then you are not likely to succeed.

Setting up a blog and publishing quality content is only half the battle. You also need to devote sufficient time and resources to promote your blog and drive traffic, whether it is through free methods or paid advertising. Good SEO is a part of this.

4. Not Leveraging Guest Posting

I have not come across a single successful blog where guest posting did not play a role in its success. Guest posting is widely considered to be one of the best ways to increase traffic and build your readership. It is a great way to tap into the user-base and popularity of popular blogs from your niche.

You can also invite guest posts from other authors, adding variety to your blog and helping you to expand your content.

5. Not Taking Advantage of Google Authorship

The new authorship feature by Google is a must for every blogger. It is a Google initiative to attribute content to its original author.

Blogging Mistake - Authorship

It offers several benefits.

  • It adds rich snippet to your content in search results.
  • It increases click through rates of your content in search results.
  • It publicises your other related content to readers in search results.
  • It builds trust and credibility for your content.

In spite of its widely accepted benefits, this feature is still under-utilised. A recent study by Search Engine Land has found that only 9% Of Tech blogs implement Google Authorship properly. This is far less for other niches.

6. Not Using Media in Your Posts

Images speak a thousand words. Use of images or videos in posts improves the quality of posts and makes it more appealing for readers. From last year onwards, I have started to follow a general practice to include at least one image in every one of my posts. Needless to say, I have seen a significant increase in the popularity of my posts since then. Use of graphics also makes your content more shareable on social media.

Another good tip is to revisit your old posts and add relevant images where necessary. This is a great way to revitalise old posts and generate fresh interest in them.

7. Not Proofreading Posts Before Publishing

Writing a new blog post can be a tedious process and it is easy to make mistakes. Not spending sufficient time to proofread is a common mistake made by bloggers. In addition to correcting simple spelling and grammar mistakes, proofreading also helps improve the quality of the post by highlighting simple tweaks and improvements that may not have been evident at the time of writing.

(AP) ? Justin Verlander pitched scoreless ball and the Detroit Tigers took advantage of a pair of wild pitches by Jarrod Parker, taking a 2-0 lead over the Oakland Athletics through three innings in the decisive Game 5 of their AL division series Thursday night.

With the season at stake for both sides, Austin Jackson lined a double off the wall in left-center to score Omar Infante in the second. Jackson then stole second, advanced to third on Quintin Berry's bunt and scored on Parker's second wild pitch to quiet a yellow-towel twirling crowd that sold out the Oakland Coliseum.

Verlander allowed baserunners in each of the first two innings but never lost his grip. The reigning AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner struck out four.

Oakland had struck out 43 times in the series, the most of any postseason matchup in franchise history that lasted five games. The previous most was 42 in the 1974 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The A's were looking to become the ninth team to win a best-of-five series after dropping the first two games.

They don't have to look far ? or far back ? for the last time, either. After dropping the first two at home, the Bay Area rival San Francisco Giants beat the Reds for the third straight game in Cincinnati earlier Thursday to advance to the NL championship series.

Even though they were at home, Oakland faced perhaps an ever bigger challenge in the winner-take-all finale against Verlander.

The hard-throwing right-hander struck out Coco Crisp and Stephen Drew before Yoenis Cespedes doubled to the left-center gap in the first. Then Seth Smith, who hit a game-tying two-run double in the ninth to lead the A's back in Game 4, hit a weak grounder back to Verlander on the first pitch.

In the second, Brandon Moss drew a two-out walk. After catcher Alex Avila briefly lost a pitch that Verlander bounced in the dirt, he threw out Moss trying to take second.

Wild pitches proved to be Parker's downfall.

Infante singled leading off the first, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Jackson's double. After Jackson moved over on Berry's bunt, Parker threw a wild pitch that got by catcher Derek Norris to hand Detroit a 2-0 lead.

The last A's pitcher to throw two wild pitches in a postseason game was Dan Haren in a Game 4 loss against Detroit on Oct. 14, 2006,

The Tigers were looking to advance to the AL championship series for the second straight season. They lost to the Texas Rangers in six games last year. Oakland was swept by the Tigers in four games in its last trip to the championship series in 2006.

The rematch of Game 1 starters featured contrasting credentials.

Parker, another Oakland rookie, allowed all three runs in 6 1-3 innings in a 3-1 loss. The right-hander faced a daunting challenge to keep pace with Verlander, who allowed a leadoff home run by Coco Crisp in seven innings in Game 1, a usual dominance led Detroit manager Jim Leyland to predict "this game will probably be decided with Verlander in the game."

"I don't have anybody better than him," Leyland said before the game. "And if they get to him that much, we'll probably be in trouble."

Verlander is the fifth pitcher to start a winner-take-all playoff game the year after winning a Cy Young. In all four previous instances, that pitcher's team lost the game.

The four pitchers were Steve Carlton (1981 Phillies), David Cone (1995 Yankees), Barry Zito (2003 Athletics) and Roy Halladay (2011 Phillies).

When Detroit arrived in the Bay Area this week, a Coliseum celebration seemed to be only a matter of time after taking the first two games at home.

Then again, this A's team has accomplished some impressive feats all season, including a major league-best 14 walk-off wins in the regular season ? plus No. 15 on Wednesday night, when they rallied rallying from two runs down in the ninth off closer Jose Valverde for a stunning 4-3 victory ? and taking three in a row from the two-time reigning AL champion Texas Rangers to win the AL West crown on the final day of the season.

Thursday night was the sixth straight game that Oakland's visiting clubhouse was prepped for a clinching celebration, with plastic sheets that cover the lockers and floors repacked each time, along with bottles of bubbly waiting to be popped.

What The Swedish Pirate Party Wants With Patents, Trademarks, And

0

Infopolicy ? Christian Engstr?m

Infopolicy ? Christian Engstr?m

This afternoon, I?ll make a presentation to a group of patent lawyers in Stockholm, with the title ?What does the Pirate Party want with Patents, Trademarks, and Copyright??. Here?s a rough summary of what I?m about to tell them, including a few links that will probably get mentioned.

Patents should be abolished as soon as possible. An increasing amount of research, predominantly in the United States, shows us that the patent system as a whole has a negative effect on society. It can be positive for specific actors (mostly pharma companies and patent trolls), but for society as a whole, the patent system is damaging to innovation, to competition, and to economic growth.

The study The Case Against Patents (25 pages) by Michele Boldrin and David Levine at Washington University in St Louis is a good read on our view of the patent system (summary here).

When it comes to pharmaceutical patents, we agree that it?s not feasible to abolish the patent system and hope that the market makes sure enough research just happens anyway. Therefore, we?d like to replace pharmaceutical patents with the system known internationally as delinkage. It means that pharmaceutical research is financed directly from the public coffers, with research results made freely available for anyone to use in any way, spurring a free competition between manufacturers of generic (non-patent-encumbered) drugs. This system would save at least half of the taxpayers? bill for pharmaceuticals, while at the same time channeling more money to research. As a positive side-effect, besides the savings, it would also save hundreds of thousands ? or millions ? of lives in the third world.

When it comes to patents in all other areas, we?re willing to listen to anybody and everybody who believes they can show that the patent system provides any kind of net positive effect to society in additional areas, but so far, nobody has been able to show such a net positive (with the exception of pharma). In every such case, the burden of proof is on those who argue for an introduction or continuation of these governmentally-sanctioned monopolies, and not on us who argue for their abolition.

Trademarks are basically good, as they primarily serve as consumer protection. If it says ?Coca-Cola? on the can, I know that The Coca-Cola Company guarantees its quality. If I am dissatisfied with the product, I know where I can go to complain, but if I like it, I also know where I can go to get more. This also gives the trademark system a long-term effect of rewarding good and honest companies. While this is a positive effect, the protection of consumers is the foundation and the most important.

In some countries, like France and Italy, the trademark rights have grown to also include punishments for consumers who buy counterfeit goods (either because they want to, or because they were fooled to). This is a bad development that we?re firmly against. The legitimacy of the trademark system comes from protecting consumers. Should it be distorted into legislation that punishes consumers, like patents and copyrights do, it would lose its legitimacy.

Compared to patents and copyrights, it seems that the trademark business has kept their house cleaner against degenerate subversion, and the trademark practices haven?t fallen for the same unhealthy expansion as the patent and copyright laws have. There have been a few upsetting cases of abuse or attempted abuse, like when Louis Vuitton tried to censor a Danish artist ?to protect its brand? (it?s likely they haven?t done anything more damaging to the brand in modern years), or when a guitar maker who got the phrase ?Born to Rock? registered as a trademark for guitars starts suing T-shirt vendors to ban them from printing the phrase at all, despite clearly not being used as a trademark in the latter case.

This type of abuse must be fought down, primarily by the industry itself, secondarily by the courts, and tertiarily by legislators if nothing else works. But the foundation of trademark law remains sound: forcing and rewarding honesty towards consumers.

Copyright must be reformed. We?d like to keep the copyright monopoly for commercial use (but with shorter, more sensible terms of protection). The bug problem is that copyright has expanded in the past 20 years, going from being something that only corporations needed to care about, into something that criminalizes the entire young generation (and more and more people who aren?t even particularly young anymore).

The Swedish Pirate Party wants to;

  • Legalize file-sharing and other non-commercial sharing of culture between private individuals, both up- and downloading. As a direct consequence, search engines like The Pirate Bay will also be legal, as nobody can be charged with ?aiding and abetting? an activity that is fully legal in itself (the file-sharing between private individuals).
  • At most 20 years of protection from the publication of a work. Among other things, this also solves the problem with orphan works and the ?black hole of the 20th century?.
  • Registration after five years. Rightsholders who want to keep using their commercial monopoly after the first five years must register their works, so that commercial users who want to pay for use know where they can get a license to do so. This also solves the problem with orphan works.
  • Sensible regulation for quotations, parodies, and remixes even when it comes to audio, video and more (today, you can only quote text ? Ed.), and a harmonization within the EU of exceptions to copyright (?exceptions and limitations?).
  • A ban on DRM (digital restriction mechanisms), or at a bare minimum, making it explicitly legal to break digital restriction mechanisms if needed for any use that is itself legal.

If we reform copyright law according to this proposal, it would solve 99% of the serious problems that today?s copyright causes, while at the same time, 99% of the business models that work today in the entertainment and cultural sectors would keep doing so if the companies would adapt ever so slightly to a new world.

It?s not just the Swedish Pirate Party that thinks copyright law should be reformed like this. Since one year back, it?s also the official position of the entire Green group in the European Parliament.

There?s more on this proposal for copyright reform in the book The Case For Copyright Reform, written by me and Rick Falkvinge, the founder of the Pirate Party. The book is available for a free download as an e-book, or available at-cost as a print-on-demand book, at copyrightreform.eu.
