PST: Breaking down Dempsey's big goal vs. CR

The conditions in Commerce City meant moments of execution were going to be rare. The U.S. didn?t even have a good spell of possession until around the 14th minute, but it didn?t take long after that for the team to create the night?s only goal.

For Clint Dempsey, it is his the seventh goal of the 2014 qualifying cycle and the 32nd of his senior national team career. Only two back of Eric Wynalda for second on the U.S.?s scoring list, Dempsey goal rate is now the highest among the program?s top 10 all-time scorers.

source:

The highlight picks up after Dempsey has received the ball from Graham Zusi, turned toward the middle of the field, and drawn two Costa Rican defenders. He plays the ball toward the left channel for Jozy Altidore as Michael Bradley surges from midfield. Between Herculez Gomez at the far left of the shot and Clint Dempsey now trailing the player, the U.S. has Costa Rica four-on-four and disorganized at they approach goal.

source:

Altidore takes the ball with his left foot, moves it back onto his right, and looks to put his shot on goal. Four Costa Rican defenders have lined up to play the shot, and while right wing back?Cristian Gamboa has gotten back into the play, three U.S. attackers are going to have free runs on goal. If Altidore elected to pass, he?d be able to set up any of his teammates for a clear shot, but electing to get it on goal, the U.S. is set to claim any rebound Keylor Navas might give up.

source:

A hard driven shot by Altidore never makes it on Navas. Roy Miller blocks the shot, but between Michael Bradley on the left and Clint Dempsey on the right, the U.S. is going to be able to convert any loose ball that doesn?t fly out of the box. Costa Rica?s defenders are left watching as the U.S. players who have continued their runs are in prime position of convert the chance.

source:

Navas is on his back side as the ball falls right to Dempsey. In stride, Dempsey?s right footed one-timer meets an unprotected net, converting the game?s only goal.

Though Dempsey deserves full credit for both starting and finishing the play, Jozy Altidore?s part shouldn?t be ignored. While he did have options to pass to his right and left, Altidore did what teammates expect their strikers to do. He turned and drove the ball toward goal, his decisive act allowed Dempsey and Bradley to be equally decisive in their movement.

As a result, the U.S. was able to convert their only shot on goal, the team?s 1-0 victory vaulting them to second place in CONCACAF?s young final round.

Do I know you? Memory patterns help us recall the social webs we weave

Friday, March 22, 2013

With a dizzying number of ties in our social networks ? that your Aunt Alice is a neighbor of Muhammad who is married to Natasha who is your wife's boss ? it's a wonder we remember any of it. How do we keep track of the complexity? We cheat, says a Cornell University sociologist in Scientific Reports.

Humans keep track of social information not by rote memorization but with simplifying rules, as you might remember a number sequence that always increases by two, according to author Matthew Brashears, assistant professor of sociology. People recall social ties that both involve at least three people who know each other and kinship labels such as "aunt" twice as well as they remember ties that do not, even though triad kinship networks are far more complex, he said.

"Humans are able to manage big, sprawling, complicated social networks essentially because we don't remember big, sprawling, complicated social networks. We remember simplified, regular structures that bear a reasonable similarity to what those networks look like," Brashears said. In cases where the relationships don't fit the pattern, we remember the pattern and the few exceptions, instead of remembering all the ties simultaneously, he added.

About 300 study participants read paragraphs describing a group of people and how they relate to each other. Some paragraphs included kinship labels and some didn't. Other paragraphs included closed triads ? where three people each know each other ? while other paragraphs did not. The participants were then asked to recall as many of the ties as possible.

When the paragraphs contained both kinship labels and closed triads, the participants' recall improved by 50 percent compared with participants whose paragraphs included neither ? even though the kinship and triad paragraphs contained nearly twice as many relationships.

"That's a pretty substantial improvement," Brashears said. Moreover, participants did worse when trying to recall paragraphs that had kin relationships but no triads. "It's like trying to remember a random number sequence by using the 'increase by two' rule," he said.

The study helps explain how humans actively manage so many more social ties compared with other primates ? a key question in the field of sociology. The answer is that we evolved the capacity to spot and use social patterns.

"Our ability to remember and manage socials ties ? and build bigger groups of people ? had to do with coming up with new and interesting ways of compressing that information. It's about how we structure our groups and how that allows us to remember them, as opposed to just sheer cognitive horsepower," he said.

The research may help also explain some peculiarities of human networks, such as transitivity: If George is my friend and Susan is my friend, then Susan and George are likely to be friends. Brashears suspects that some social networks are easier to remember than others, and individuals who build groups that conform to those rules were more evolutionarily successful.

"Some of the reasons why human networks look the way they do is because they have to, in order for us to process them, to manage it cognitively," he says.

Medical researchers may benefit from the research as they seek to understand why some people don't grasp social intricacies as well as others. "We may have a better ability to understand social anxiety and autism spectrum if we understand how we're compressing and reconstructing social information using these mechanisms," Brashears said.

Officials: Miner dead, 1 rescued in Utah cave-in

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? A miner died Friday and another was injured after they became trapped in a cave-in at a central Utah coal mine, authorities said.

The cave-in was reported earlier in the day at a mine in Bear Canyon, about 10 miles west of the small mining town of Huntington, the Emery County sheriff's office said. Rescuers freed one man but were unable to save the other miner, officials said.

A rescue team recovered the body of the second miner. Huntington Mayor Hilary Gordon identified him as 28-year-old Elam Jones, whose mother is a Huntington city councilwoman.

The injured miner, who has not been identified, was treated and released from Castleview Hospital in Price.

The mine is part of the Castle Valley Mining Complex. Preliminary information showed that a roof fall occurred on a pillaring section of the mine after a large rock fell, according to federal mine safety officials. The Mine Safety and Health Administration was investigating, said spokesman Jesse Lawder.

Messages left with the mine's operator, Rhino Resource Partners, were not immediately returned. The Kentucky-based company bought the mining complex, which has 26.1 million tons of coal reserves, in August 2010, according to its website. Federal records show one injury was reported at the mine last year.

Such tragedies are familiar to those who live in the area, which depends largely on mining for its economy. The mine is in the same county where the Crandall Canyon Mine collapsed in 2007, killing nine people. The operator of that mine, Genwal Resources Inc., an affiliate of Ohio-based Murray Energy Corp., reached a $949,351 settlement in 2012 with the Mine Safety and Health Administration over safety violations.

Gordon, who was mayor during the Crandall Canyon collapse, told KSL-TV and the Deseret News that the latest mine collapse brought back memories of that disaster.

"Whenever there's a cave-in at any of the mines, you hold your breath," she said. "Coal is very powerful, and Mother Nature is very powerful."

Jones helped in the rescue of miners at Crandall Canyon and later spoke at a vigil for those who died and were injured there, according to the Tribune.

"Everybody who was up there put in 100 percent," said Jones, 23 at the time. "We did everything we possibly could. But the mountain won't let us do nothing else."

Trade union rules out strikes at Lufthansa over Easter

BERLIN (Reuters) - German trade union Verdi said Deutsche Lufthansa's air traffic over Easter would not be disrupted by strikes in the ongoing wage dispute at Germany's largest airline.

The union said in a statement late on Friday that no agreement was reached in the latest round of talks and that another walkout was possible before the next round, which is due to start on April 17, but not over Easter.

The union's demands and Lufthansa's offers so far have been "far apart", Verdi said.

Lufthansa on Thursday had to cancel close to 40 percent of its flights as staff went on strike on the eve of wage talks with the German airline, which is trying to cut costs to compete with Middle East and low-cost carriers.

The strike had left exasperated passengers stranded as they waited in long lines snaking through Frankfurt airport's Terminal 1, the home of Lufthansa.

Efforts by big European airlines such as Lufthansa and Air France-KLM to shrink costs in the face of soaring jet fuel prices and fierce competition from Middle Eastern airlines and low-cost carriers have fanned tensions with workers.

Verdi is demanding a 5.2 percent pay rise for 33,000 cabin crew and ground staff at Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa Technik, Lufthansa Systems, catering unit LSG Sky Chefs and ground crews. It also wants a commitment by Lufthansa to safeguard jobs.

Lufthansa, Europe's biggest airline by revenue, wants to freeze pay and get staff to work an hour more each week to help it to remain competitive.

10 Ideas That Make Business Relationships Work ... - Sales Training

Many salespeople and sales managers that I meet and work with are really excellent at their job. They accentuate the positive nature of what they do, and create reasons for clients to not only do business with them in the first place, but also remain loyal, even in the face of concerns and trouble.

What do they bring to the client that make them maintain this loyalty? How do they make business relationships work so well, they create advocates for themselves and profitability for their clients?

Here are ten ideas that I believe make business relationships work:

1) Both the supplier and the customer share common ideas, philosophies and business values. This creates a clear picture for both of them to paint and add colour to.

2) The customer views the supplier as a valued, trusted advisor and a strategic partner. This means the client sees you, not as a vendor of products but as a supplier of value.

3) Both parties see each other as contributing to each other?s success. There isn?t an ?us and them? mentality ? they both thrive as business increases.

4) The client sees the supplier as an additional spoke in their business wheel. At no time is contact between them seen as an inconvenience.

5) The supplier asks the power questions that are needed for the client to think about their future business. Making the client concentrate on the future roles you are going to play in their business keeps the focus on value, not cost.

6) Both parties focus on positive results and establish measurements to ensure the route is clear. This means there is no focus on blame or lack of achievement ? both realise the emphasis should be on outcomes and results, not blame.

7) The supplier keeps to the SLA at all times. Keeping commitments builds trust and this will lay the firm foundations for honesty and confidence in the future.

8 ) You prove yourself likeable, building confidence and belief as time goes on. This way, you recognise you are dealing with human beings and not automatons.

9) Both parties are willing to try new ideas and be creative. Everyone in the business relationship recognises there are more opportunities when you think out the box, so they share new ideas and concepts

10) You create value continuously, in the ways that the client can measure it. This means the emphasis is never on cost but always on how the client can increase their productivity, profits, promotions or products.

These aren?t the only ones, of course, but they give you a good idea of what the top quality salespeople work on continuously to create top value in their business relationships.

Happy Selling!

Relocating To Cleveland - The Quick Guide | Cleveland Real Estate ...

RELOCATING TO CLEVELAND ? THE QUICK GUIDE

?

So, you are relocating to Cleveland. There are probably a lot of things going on in your mind right now about your big move, and your stress level is likely through the roof. Don?t worry,? I was in your shoes 16 years ago and things have worked out great for me here, and they will for you too.

You just need to take a deep breath and read through our quick guide to Relocating To Cleveland. We offer some helpful tips to help get you started. If you would like even more information, you will want to check out our Ultimate Guide To Relocating To Cleveland. It?s a little longer to read, but well worth it.

A LITTLE ABOUT CLEVELAND

Since Cleveland is going to be your new home, you might as well accept it and learn a little about our great Midwestern city. First off, Cleveland is known as being a big city with a small town feel.? The people are friendly and there is a lot to do all year round. We have a great Art Museum,? lively Theater District , great zoo, and Cleveland is also home to 3 major sports teams and numerous minor league teams as well.

Here is our list of the top 5 things that are great about Cleveland:

1. Community ? Cleveland is a ?small big city? where people can move here and quickly feel like they belong.

2. Cost of Living ? Where else has so much to offer and such incredibly affordable housing! The choices are unlimited and the prices are right.

3. Culture at your fingertips ? You don?t have to drive far to access a myriad of excellent museums, theater, or our world class symphony.

4. Fine Dining ? ?Iron Chef Michael Symon?s amazing restaurants are only the beginning. We?ve discovered great places to eat in every neighborhood, both East and West sides.

5. Schools ? The Northeast Ohio area has some of the top rated schools not only in the state, but the country.

So now that you have learned a little bit about our town, on to the task at hand, your upcoming relocation to Cleveland.

STEP 1 ? ADDRESS YOUR HOUSING NEEDS

A major step in the relocation process is finding a place to live in Cleveland. Do you want to live on the East side or West side? Are you going to rent or buy? What can you get for your money here in Cleveland?

Cleveland has some great housing options, but you?ll need someone to guide you through the process. You need to find yourself a great real estate agent, someone you feel can help you not only with housing, but all the many other things that come with a major relocation, such as finding good doctors, schools, and contractors. Your agent will be a main source of information and guidance during your move, so do your research and choose wisely.

?

STEP 2: WHERE TO LIVE

The first thing you need to decide is if you are going to live on the East Side or West side. In Cleveland, people typically live and work on the same side of town, rarely venturing to the other side. You need to keep this in mind if you have friends or family on one side of town and choose to live on the other as you may not see them very often. That is why deciding where to live is a very important decision.

The East and West sides are different yet do share some similar characteristics. They both offer older and newer housing, moderately priced and luxury homes as well.

For those who like the water, there are more suburbs on the West side. However, there are more luxury homes and estates located on the East side.

?

SCHOOLS

Also, if you have children, you may want to look into the different school systems and find one that is the best fit for your family. Then, you can find housing located within that particular school district. You?ll be happy to know that some of the best public schools in the state can be found right here in the Cleveland area.

?

Overall, there are a lot of great options of where to live in Cleveland. The most important thing is to become educated about the different areas of town so that you can be comfortable with your final decision.

?

STEP 3: THE BIG MOVE

We are not going to get into a lot of detail here regarding the actual home buying process, as we have a ?Complete Guide To Buying A Home In Cleveland? that thoroughly covers the entire process. Our focus here is to prepare you for the move as we want you to be organized, as this helps alleviate stress levels during such a big transition.

One important thing to remember, especially if your move is related to your job, is to keep all records and receipts regarding the move as many expenses can be tax-deductible ( consult your accountant for details ).

PRIOR TO MOVING

Here is a helpful list of tips to consider PRIOR to moving:

1. ? ? ?Make sure your personal items are properly insured during the move

2. ? ? ?Have legal, medical, and insurance records in a secure place.

3. ? ? ?Get medical records for yourself, children, and pets. This includes dentists, orthodontists, optometrists and veterinarians.

4. ? ? ?Make travel arrangements for your pets.

5. ? ? ?Have all computers backed up prior to moving them.

Now, for the move. At this point, you should have already contacted a moving company and the date should be scheduled. It is important to note that you want to be extra careful to make sure your new home is accessible to you prior to scheduling the moving date.

In Ohio, the closing date is not always the same as the transfer date, the day you actually get the keys and become the owner of the home. Therefore, communication with your agent and the title company are critical to avoid any last minute headaches.

MOVING DAY

Here?s the big day you?ve been waiting for, moving day. This is a very exciting yet stressful day, so being organized and prepared will help. Here are some things that you should have with you:

1. ? ? ?Phone numbers of real estate agent, title company, and moving company.

2. ? ? ?Map of the local area, although a GPS will help as well.

3. ? ? ?Sufficient cash or travelers checks

4. ? ? ?Enough clothes, toiletries and medicine, if applicable, to last a few days, in case the movers are late.

5. ? ? ?Personal items that are not replaceable should be kept with you as well.

It may also be wise as a back up to have the name and number of a local hotel, once again, just in case the movers are delayed.

Congratulations again on your upcoming move to Cleveland. With a little help and a positive attitude, this could be the best thing that ever happened to you. Good Luck!

Too Many Pets and Not Enough Animals | Mother Jones

[This essay will appear in "Animals," the Spring 2013 issue of Lapham's Quarterly. This slightly adapted version is posted at Tom Dispatch and Mother Jones with the kind permission of that magazine.]

London housewife Barbara Carter won a "grant a wish" charity contest, and said she wanted to kiss and cuddle a lion. Wednesday night she was in a hospital in shock and with throat wounds. Mrs. Carter, forty-six, was taken to the lions' compound of the Safari Park at Bewdley Wednesday. As she bent forward to stroke the lioness, Suki, it pounced and dragged her to the ground. Wardens later said, "We seem to have made a bad error of judgment."

-- British news bulletin, 1976

Having once made a similar error of judgment with an Australian koala, I know it to be the one the textbooks define as the failure to grasp the distinction between an animal as an agent of nature and an animal as a symbol of culture. The koala was supposed to be affectionate, comforting, and cute. Of this I was certain because it was the creature of my own invention that for two weeks in the spring of 1959 I'd been presenting to readers of the San Francisco Examiner prior to its release by the Australian government into the custody of the Fleishacker Zoo.

The Examiner was a Hearst newspaper, the features editor not a man to ignore a chance for sure-fire sentiment, my task that of the reporter assigned to provide the advance billing. Knowing little or nothing about animals other than what I'd read in children's books or seen in Walt Disney cartoons, I cribbed from the Encyclopedia Britannica (Phascolarctos cinereus, ash-colored fur, nocturnal, fond of eucalyptus leaves), but for the most part I relied on A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh, the tales of Brer Rabbit, and archival images of President Teddy Roosevelt, the namesake for whom the teddy bear had been created and stuffed, in 1903 by a toy manufacturer in Brooklyn.

Stouthearted, benevolent, and wise, the koala incoming from the Antipodes was the little friend of all the world, and on the day of its arrival at the airport, I was carrying roses wrapped in a cone of newsprint. The features editor had learned his trade in Hollywood in the 1940s, and he had in mind a camera shot of my enfolding a teddy bear in a warm and welcoming embrace. "Lost child found in the wilderness," he had said. "Lassie comes home." The koala didn't follow script. Annoyed by the flashbulbs, clawing furiously at my head and shoulders, it bloodied my shirt and tie, shredded the roses, urinated on my suit and shoes.

The unpleasantness didn't make the paper. The photograph was taken before the trouble began, and so the next morning in print, there we were, the koala and I, man and beast glad to see one another, the San Francisco Examiner's very own Christopher Robin framed in the glow of an A-list fairy tale with Brer Rabbit, Teddy Roosevelt, and Winnie-the-Pooh, all for one and one for all as once had been our common lot in Eden.

The Pantomime of Brutes

Rumors and reports of human relations with animals are the world's oldest news stories, headlined in the stars of the zodiac, posted on the walls of prehistoric caves, inscribed in the languages of Egyptian myth, Greek philosophy, Hindu religion, Christian art, our own DNA. Belonging within the circle of humankind's intimate acquaintance until somewhere toward the end of the nineteenth century, animals appeared as both agents of nature and symbols of culture. Constant albeit speechless companions, they supplied energies fit to be harnessed or roasted, but they also were believed to possess qualities inherent in human beings, subject to the close observation of the ways in which man and beast both resembled and differed from one another.

Unable to deliver lectures, the lion and the elephant taught by example; so did the turtle, the wolf, and the ant. Aesop's Fables, composed in the sixth century BC, accorded with the further researches of Aristotle, who, about 200 years later, in his History of Animals, set up the epistemological framework that for the next two millennia incorporated the presence of animals in the center ring of what became known as Western civilization:

"Just as we pointed out resemblances in the physical organs, so in a number of animals we observe gentleness or fierceness, mildness or cross temper, courage or timidity, fear or confidence, high spirits or low cunning... Other qualities in man are represented by analogous and not identical qualities; for instance, just as in man we find knowledge, wisdom, and sagacity, so in certain animals there exists some other natural potentiality akin to these."

Other peoples in other parts of the world developed different sets of relations with animals worshipped as gods, but in the European theaters of operation, they served as teachers of both natural and political science. The more that was learned about their "analogous and not identical qualities," the more fabulous they became. Virgil's keeping of bees on his country estate in 30 BC led him in book four of the Georgics to admire their work ethic?"At dawn they pour forth from the gates?no loitering"; to applaud their sense of a public and common good?"they share the housing of their city,/passing their lives under exalted laws"; to approve of their chastity?"They forebear to indulge/in copulation or to enervate/their bodies in Venus' ways."

The studies of Pliny the Elder in the first century demonstrated to his satisfaction that so exceptional were the wonders of the animal kingdom that man by comparison "is the only animal that knows nothing and can learn nothing without being taught. He can neither speak, nor walk, nor eat, nor do anything without the prompting of nature, but only weep."

To the scientific way of looking at animals adapted by the Greco-Roman poets and philosophers, medieval Christianity added the dimension of science fiction?any and all agents of nature not to be trusted until or unless they had been baptized in the font of a symbol or herded into the cage of an allegory. In the illuminated pages of tenth-century bibles and the rose windows of Gothic cathedrals, the bee became a sign of hope, the crow and the goat both references to Satan, the fly indicative of lust, the lamb and the dove variant embodiments of Christ. Instead of remarking upon the extraordinary talents of certain animals, the holy fathers produced mythical beings, among them the dragon (huge, batwinged, fire breathing, barbed tail) and the unicorn (white body, blue eyes, the single horn on its forehead colored red at the tip).

The resurrection of classical antiquity in fifteenth-century Italy restored the emphasis on the observable correlation between man and beast. The anatomical drawings in Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks (of horses, swans, human cadavers) are works of art of a match with The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. He saw human beings as organisms among other organisms participant in the great chain of being, the various life forms merging into one another in their various compounds of air, earth, fire, and water. Giuseppe Arcimboldo's 1566 portrait of a man's head anticipates the conclusion reached in 1605 by the English bishop Joseph Hall: "Mankind, therefore, hath within itself his goats, chameleons, salamanders, camels, wolves, dogs, swine, moles, and whatever sorts of beasts: there are but a few men amongst men."

The eighteenth-century naturalists shared with Virgil the looking to the animal kingdom for signs of good government. The Count of Buffon, keeper of the royal botanical garden for King Louis XV, recognized in 1767 the beaver as a master architect capable of building important dams, but he was even more impressed by the engineering of the beaver's civil society, by "some particular method of understanding one another, and of acting in concert? However numerous the republic of beavers may be, peace and good order are uniformly maintained in it."

China calls on Japan, US, EU to avoid devaluation

China's commerce minister appealed Friday to other major governments to avoid suppressing the value of their currencies to boost exports, warning that could hurt global growth.

Chen Deming was responding to a question at a news conference about the Japanese yen's weakness but said his appeal also was directed at the United States and Europe.

The yen has fallen by about 20 percent against the dollar since the middle of last year, prompting concern other governments might respond by driving down their currencies to keep exports competitive.

"I'm worried that 'competitive devaluation' will lead to oversupply of money and it will have a negative effect on global economic growth," Chen said.

The new Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, has called publicly for a weaker yen to help exporters compete. His government has not directly intervened in currency markets but its policies have convinced traders it will create new money, eroding the Japanese currency's value.

Several developing economies also have criticized the U.S. Federal Reserve's program of bond-buying, dubbed quantitative easing, for pushing up the value of their currencies relative to the dollar.

Finance officials of the 20 biggest industrialized and developing countries issued a joint pledge Feb. 17 in Moscow to "refrain from competitive devaluation." They promised to "resist all forms of protectionism and keep our markets open."

Chen appealed to other governments to stick to their anti-devaluation pledge.

"If there were a huge devaluation of those major currencies, it would deliver a huge shock to developing countries by depressing our exports," he said.
