Jesse Jackson Jr. Leaves Mayo Clinic For Undisclosed Location Amid Rumored Plea Negotiations

CHICAGO -- Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has left the Mayo Clinic, where he was being treated for bipolar disorder for the second time since taking a leave of absence in June.

Mayo spokesman Nick Hanson says Jackson left the Minnesota clinic Tuesday. He did not know where Jackson was going.

Jackson was elected Nov. 6 to a ninth full term representing his Chicago area district, despite not campaigning and barely appearing in public since taking medical leave.

He spent election night at the clinic after returning there in October amid reports that he faced a new federal investigation into potential misuse of his campaign finances.

Jackson remains under a U.S. House committee's investigation into his dealings with imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Landmark Grampian project to better protect people with autism ...

A new initiative launches across the Grampian region today, to help address the unique challenges faced by people with autism who are victims of crime and accidents.

The Autism Alert card will help ensure those with the condition are quickly identified and is supported by Grampian Police, a range of partner organisations across the region, Mark McDonald, MSP for North East Scotland and The National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland.

NAS Scotland is heralding the card a ?breakthrough? for Grampian, and encouraging all young people and adults with autism across the region to apply. An estimated 50,000 Scots have autism, with nearly 6,000 thought to live in the Grampian region.

The card is to be rolled out from Monday 12th November. Featuring the Grampian Police logo, it will include details of a personal contact who can lead police and support organisations through the best ways to help the individual with autism through what can be a highly pressurised experience.

The Autism Alert card can also be used in a day to day context, helping ease communication and understanding challenges when someone with autism is shopping, at a social event, using leisure facilities or public transport.

Dr Robert Moffat, National Director of The National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland said

Being a victim of a crime or accident can be a stressful experience for anyone. But for someone with autism it can be particularly disorientating and frightening.

People with the condition often have difficulty understanding facial expressions, can be very literal in their understanding of questions, disorientated by complex speech and easily misinterpret others? intentions. In an environment of serious crime or medical emergency these types of misunderstandings can have serious consequences.

NAS Scotland welcomes a partnership that addresses the unique challenges faced by people with autism in such a sensible, straightforward and effective way. The new Autism Alert card is a crucial step in ensuring Grampian Police and other organisations are autism aware, and helps people with autism to access the same rights most of us take for granted.

David Silvester, 66, a retired joiner from Moray, has Asperger syndrome. He is supporting the launch of the Grampian Autism Alert card.?David comments

On the outside I appear articulate and look like I'm functioning well. This could be a real problem if I'm a victim of a crime or accident, because police will expect me to communicate and process information in the same way they do, and I can?t always do this. I believe being able to produce an Autism Alert card at times like these could help defuse misunderstandings.

Partners supporting the launch of the Aberdeenshire Autism Alert card include The National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland, Grampian Police, G4S, Aberdeen City, Moray and Aberdeenshire Councils and autism charities Autism Initiatives and Grampian Autistic Society.

Autism Alert card schemes have been launched in the Strathclyde, Lothian and Borders and Highland and Islands regions.

Speak Up, Ladies | Leeds Student Newspaper

In the ?Feedback? section of last week?s Leeds Student, amidst the cries of disagreement and support over the Nick Griffin article sat a letter that asking for more female voices in the paper. A refreshing change from the barrage of letters calling for silence (albeit, from a racist and homophobic dick). The letter encouraged ?women to write in and make their voices heard?. Booyeah, feminism.

Pushing for more female voices in a student newspaper is a worthy pursuit, though the way in which we achieve this is something that poses a difficulty for most editors. The term ?positive discrimination? springs to mind, a phrase that so frequently muddies the feminist waters. ?But like, how is holding the door open for you sexist?? someone exclaims, a confused look spread across their face. Well, imaginary-person, holding the door open for me isn?t innately sexist, holding it open because I?m a woman, is.

Picking female writers over male writers unfortunately also falls into this category. Currently going through the EU is a referendum to call for quotas to ensure more females in high-level boardroom jobs and indeed, there are many arguments for this. When the issue with getting women into management positions comes down to not whether they?re good enough, but that they?re just simply not applying, the problem is the perception, not the women. Changing the number of women in these positions allows other women to see the possibility of achieving these jobs, more women apply and et voil?, change occurs.

There?s a significant difference between the boardroom and journalism though, apart from the fact one is dull and one is the bomb. Whereas women frequently feel what?s expected of them to become the CEO is in tension with what they feel they are, journalism is different. Obviously to say that a particular job appeals to a particular gender is to make assumptions about what each gender is, or is expect to be, which is hugely regressive, but regardless, journalism reaches beyond presumptuous gender generalisations. It is because of this that picking female writers over male writers specifically for the newspaper would be massively harmful. The author of the letter acknowledges this later on when she asks for women to write, not for us to just put more writers in ? however, we should be aspiring to put the best articles in, because they?re the best written, not because they?re written by women.

Comment is chosen ultimately on the quality of writing, and how relevant the articles are to the paper that week, not based on the person who has written it. We should look beyond the author of the piece, and see that feminist issues are so frequently covered, and aren?t only cared about by women, so shouldn?t be expected to be written by women. It is the articles that are interesting, contentious, ambitious and thought provoking that get put in the paper, irrespective of the author.

'Ghastly mess' at BBC: More quit amid sex scandal

After being accused of covering up former BBC star Jimmy Savile's sexual abuse, the BBC falsely reported that a Margaret Thatcher-era politician had sexually abused children, leading to the resignation of the network's chief and the arrest of a former producer. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports. ?

By NBC News wire reports

LONDON -- The two most senior figures at BBC News ?stepped aside? Monday, as the public broadcaster revealed that the corporation?s outgoing director general will get his full year?s salary of $715,000 despite resigning under pressure after 54 days in the post.

The chairman of the broadcaster's governing body described revelations about the BBC?s multiple missteps in reporting a historic child sex abuse scandal in Britain as a ?ghastly mess? and said the BBC needed a ?radical overhaul.?

Q&A: Crisis at the BBC

"The basis for the BBC's position in this country is the trust that people have in it," Chris Patten, a one-time senior figure in Cameron's Conservative Party and the last British governor of Hong Kong, told the BBC. "If the BBC loses that, it's over."

The widening scandal also had implications on the other side of the Atlantic: Mark Thompson, until recently the man in charge of the organization, takes over as CEO of The New York Times on Monday.

Thompson's successor as Director General, George Entwistle, resigned Saturday -- taking the blame for an editorial blunder in which flagship BBC program ?Newsnight? aired false child sex abuse allegations against a former politician.

On Monday, Helen Boaden, the BBC?s director of news and current affairs, and her deputy Steve Mitchell, ?stepped aside,? the BBC?s media correspondent Torin Douglas reported.

The BBC's press office said it could not yet confirm the report but the BBC said on its own news website that there would be an announcement later in the day.

The BBC faces police and other investigations into claims that hundreds of people, some as young as 12, were sexually abused over the course of decades by one of their top personalities, the late Jimmy Savile.

It is also facing awkward questions over how the same "Newsnight" program chose not to air a report last year that investigated complaints against Savile.?

Payout
The BBC's governing body confirmed that Entwistle would get a payout of $715,000. It said the settlement took into consideration that Entwistle would continue working on BBC business, including two inquiries in the child abuse scandal.

The U.K. government quickly signaled its displeasure at the payout, with minister Maria Miller saying:?"This is a large amount of money, and tough to justify considering the circumstances of Mr. Entwistle's departure."

BBC Director General George Entwistle resigned on Saturday as the BBC spiraled further into scandal over its coverage of two separate sex abuse cases ? one, a cover up, and the other, a possible wrongful accusation. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

John Whittingdale, chairman of the House of Commons committee on culture, media and sport, said he was surprised by the settlement and has sought an explanation.

Sweeping child abuse scandal shakes BBC and other UK institutions

?My immediate reaction is that it cannot be justified but I will want to hear exactly why they think it is appropriate. ...?I think almost everybody hearing this news will say 'how can somebody who has had to leave in these circumstances, as a result of a serious failure, nevertheless get a whole year's salary,'??Whittingdale said.

Opposition politician Harriet Harman said the payout ?looked like a reward for failure,? according to a BBC report.

The BBC said Entistle's contract stipulated that he receive six months' salary, but that sum was doubled in order to ensure a speedy departure and transition.

Former minister David Mellor has criticized Entwistle as having the "leadership skills of Winnie the Pooh,"?according to The Telegraph.

Incoming New York Times chief in spotlight
Thompson, the new CEO of the New York Times, said he did not know about the nature of the investigation by "Newsnight" into Savile, and had no involvement in the decision to drop the report, which occurred while he was director general.

BBC Director General George Entwistle resigned Saturday after the network wrongly implicated a 90-year-old politician in a child sex-abuse scandal. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

He later said he had a "chance meeting" with a journalist who mentioned the Newsnight investigation into Savile, but said he had not been told any of the details or the scale of the problem.

Entwistle's departure and his acceptance of responsibility for editorial decisions as director general, adds pressure to any evaluation of Thompson's role at the BBC and whether he was ultimately accountable for the shelving of the Savile report.

Thompson did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Entwistle's resignation. Earlier, he declined to be interviewed about his plans for the New York Times, Reuters reported.

'Auntie'
The BBC, celebrating its 90th anniversary, is affectionately known in Britain as "Auntie," and respected around much of the world.

But with 22,000 staff working at eight national TV channels, 50 radio stations and an extensive Internet operation, critics say it is hampered by a complex and overly bureaucratic and hierarchical management structure.

Funded by an annual license fee levied on all TV viewers, the BBC has also long been resented by its commercial rivals, who argue it has an unfair advantage and distorts the market.

Rupert Murdoch's Sun tabloid gleefully reported Entwistle's departure with the headline "Bye Bye Chump."

Murdoch, whose own News Corp. is at the center of a recent phone-hacking scandal, was watching from afar.

?BBC mess gives Cameron golden opportunity properly to reorganize great public broadcaster,? he wrote on Twitter on Sunday.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
