Go ahead and hold holiday celebrations?just be sure to hold the ...

The winter holiday season is ap??proaching and with it, perhaps some excessively cheerful holiday glee. That may offend some religious individuals from a wide variety of faiths.

But as long as employers don?t go overboard on the religious aspects of the season and don?t punish those who want to play Scrooge, a little merriment is fine.

Recent case: Robert is Jewish and worked as a probationary accountant for the Department of Defense. His supervisor never met a holiday she didn?t love and regularly asked em??ployees to decorate their cubicles for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Valen??tine?s Day. At Christmas, she hung ornaments and candy canes in everyone?s cubicles and gave each of her employees a special holiday blanket.

Robert told her that he didn?t celebrate Christmas because he is Jewish. She asked if he missed participating in holiday celebrations and he told her ?not really.? That was the end of it until Robert was fired for poor performance.

He sued, alleging religious discrimination and retaliation for complaining about holiday decorations.

The court threw out his case. It reasoned that there was no connection between Robert?s objections to decorations and his discharge for poor performance. Nor was the supervisor?s attempt to celebrate holidays (largely in a secular way) a religiously hostile act. (Weitman v. Panetta, No. 1:11CV-1229, ND OH, 2012)

Final note: Of course, requiring employees to participate in overtly religious activities like prayer would be different. But Santa is pretty neutral territory.

Gingrich on Romney?s ?gifts? comments: ?It?s nuts?

Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney debate in Florida in January. (Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

Like several other prominent Republicans, Newt Gingrich slammed Mitt Romney's assertion in a conference call with donors last week that he lost the 2012 presidential election because of "gifts" President Barack Obama gave to blacks, Hispanics and younger voters during his first term in the White House.

"It's nuts," Gingrich told guest host Martha Raddatz on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday. "First of all, it's insulting. This would be like Wal-Mart having a bad week and going, 'The customers have really been unruly.' I mean, the job of a political leader in part is to understand the people. If we can't offer a better future that is believable to more people, we're not going to win."

[Related: Bobby Jindal calls Romney's 'gifts' comments 'absolutely wrong']

Last week, the former House Speaker admitted he was "dumbfounded" by Obama's victory--and Romney's poor performance at the polls.

"The president won an extraordinary victory," Gingrich said on NBC's "Today" show. "And the fact is we owe him the respect of trying to understand what they did and how they did it. But if you had said to me three weeks ago, Mitt Romney would get fewer votes than John McCain and it looks like he'll be 2 million fewer, I would have been dumbfounded."

But the disbelief soon turned to disillusion over Romney's divisive comments.

"I'm very disappointed with Governor Romney's analysis, which I believe is insulting and profoundly wrong," Gingrich said in an interview with KLRU-TV in Austin. "First of all, we didn't lose Asian-Americans because they got any gifts. He did worse with Asian-Americans than he did with Latinos. This is the hardest-working and most successful ethnic group in America--they ain't into gifts.

"Second, it's an insult to all Americans," he continued. "It reduces us to economic entities. You have no passion, no idealism, no dreams, no philosophy. If it had been that simple, my question would be, 'Why didn't you outbid him?' He had enough billionaire supporters, if buying the electorate was the key, he could have got all his super PAC friends together and said, don't buy ads, give gifts. Be like the northwest Indians who have gift-giving ceremonies. We could have gone town-by-town and said, 'Come here, let me give you gifts. Here are Republican gifts.' An elephant coming in with gifts on it."

Microsoft Surface users complain of Wi-Fi problems

News

Some users of Microsoft?s new Surface tablet are complaining about connectivity issues that are preventing them from getting on the Internet, according to posts on Microsoft?s Surface support forum.

Microsoft started shipping the tablet on Oct. 25 and the first complaints appeared two days later. The?thread?is now over 17 pages long, with users saying Wi-Fi issues are causing disruptions to movie streams, file downloads and Web applications.

?My connection to the wifi network frequently and repeatedly goes ?limited?. If I reset the connection by turning on and off airplane mode it works again, but only for a short amount of time ? before I have to repeat the process again,? wrote one user who goes by the name kjkeys88.

Another poster, EricLinneman, who said he is a senior consultant at Microsoft, also said his wireless connection was showing as ?limited.? Rebooting his tablet only temporary resolved the problem.

Some users thought the problem could be with their wireless router instead of the tablet, but EricLinneman wrote that the connectivity problems appeared to be consistent across different router brands. Other users said the problem was happening with their Surface tablet only, not their other wireless devices.

?I have the same issue. My iPad works just fine on the same network. And my wireless Xbox also works just fine. Only my new Surface has issue,? wrote poster Brian Peal.

A forum moderator and Surface support engineer at Microsoft, Steven_B, wrote on Nov. 5 that Microsoft was investigating the issue.

?We?re sorry to hear about the WiFi going into Limited connectivity and having poor signal strength. We are aware of the issue and are currently investigating the cause,? wrote Steven_B on the board.

Microsoft declined to immediately comment on the issue.

The problem is likely to be a software issue caused by buggy code or a driver conflict, according to Zeus Kerravala, founder and principal at ZK Research.

Limited connectivity was a problem with older Windows laptops, resulting from conflicting Wi-Fi drivers, Kerravala said. For example, a default Wi-Fi driver in Windows could conflict with the driver provided by a PC maker.

Microsoft now has to patch the Windows RT OS on the Surface tablet, Kerravala said.

?That?s what Microsoft does, patch things,? Kerravala said. ?I?m sure they will.?

He didn?t think the issue would affect sales of the tablet.

Microsoft recently?issued?software updates for Windows RT and a firmware update for the Surface tablet. Microsoft said the update provides performance improvements, and did not mention any big fixes that it might address.

Users of Apple?s iPad have also complained of Wi-Fi?connectivity issues?in the past, but they did not appear to affect sales of the device.

Rockets fly over Israel and Gaza amid talk of truce - World News

More than 50 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds more wounded in the four days of unrelenting Israeli assaults. Egyptian officials are working on securing a truce between Israel and the Palestinian factions, which could help avert a war both sides say they are prepared to fight. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 11:44 a.m. ET: TEL AVIV, Israel?- Israel was prepared to substantially broaden its operation in the Gaza strip, the country's prime minister said on Sunday as its military planes continued to bomb targets in Gaza City.

"The Israel Defense Forces have attacked more than 1,000 terror targets in the Gaza Strip," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a cabinet meeting. "We are exacting a heavy price from Hamas and the terrorist organizations and the Israel Defence Forces are prepared for a significant expansion of the operation."?

He gave no specifics and made no mention of the possibility of a ground offensive.?

Palestinian medical officials said Sunday at least 10 civilians, including women and young children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City.?

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama said?he fully supported Israel's right to defend itself and called for an end to the firing of missiles into Israel by militants inside Gaza in order for a peace process to go ahead.

"There's no country on earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders," Obama said at a press conference in Thailand during a Southeast Asian tour. "We are fully supportive of Israel's right to defend itself."?

President Barack Obama spoke on the unrest in the Middle East while on a trip to Asia. The president's trip is meant to put a focus on foreign policy, with the president making a tour of the region, including Myanmar and Cambodia. NBC's Chuck Todd reports from Bangkok.

America's 'Pacific president'? Obama opens first post-election trip with visit to Thailand

'Huge bang'
At least two rockets fired from Gaza toward Tel Aviv, Israel's?commercial?capital, were shot down Sunday by Israel's Iron Dome air shield, witnesses and officials said.

NBC's Paul Goldman saw at least one missile being intercepted by Israel's anti-rocket defense system over the center of the city.

'Some indications' Hamas-Israeli truce is possible, Egypt says

"I was taking cover and heard a huge bang," Goldman said. "(I) looked up and saw the explosion in the air above me. I could smell the fire."

Israel continued bombing Palestinian militant targets in Gaza from air and sea, preparing for a possible ground invasion though Egypt saw "some indications'' of a truce ahead."

"If there is quiet in the South and no rockets and missiles are fired at Israel's citizens nor terrorist attacks engineered from the Gaza Strip, we will not attack,"?Israeli Vice Prime Minister Moshe?Yaalon said over Twitter.?

How Israel's 'Iron Dome' intercepts incoming rockets in Gaza conflict

Israel's strikes were causing widespread damage, NBC News'?Ayman?Mohyeldin said from Gaza.?"These strikes are portrayed as precision strikes, but they are anything but that given how densely populated the area is," he said.?

A strike on Sunday flattened a two-story building of the Daloo family, killing at least 10 people, Palestinian medical officials said, according to The Associated Press.

Gaza health official Ashraf al-Kidra said four women and four small children are among the dead.

It was not immediately clear what the target of the airstrike was.

Al-Kidra said the deaths brought to 66 the number of Palestinians killed in Israel's Gaza offensive, including 32 civilians.

More than 500 rockets fired from Gaza have hit Israel, killing three people and injuring dozens.

Journalists wounded
Overnight, six journalists were wounded in Gaza City when Israeli warplanes hit a television station,?according?to Agence France-Presse.?Reuters said witnesses identified the station as al Quds, which Israel sees as pro-Hamas.?Sky News reported that around 5 a.m. local time, two missiles?hit the building that houses its studios and offices.?Al-Arabiya also said?that its offices had been hit.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said the strike had targeted a rooftop "transmission antenna used by Hamas to carry out terror activity."?

'Some indications' Hamas-Israeli truce is possible, Egypt says

Israel unleashed intensive air strikes on Wednesday, killing the commander of the Hamas Islamist group that governs Gaza and spurns peace with Israel. Israel's declared goal is to deplete Gaza arsenals and press Hamas into stopping cross-border rocket fire that has plagued Israeli border towns for years.

In Cairo, as his security deputies sought to broker a truce with Hamas leaders,?Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi said that "there are some indications that there is a possibility of a ceasefire soon, but we do not yet have firm guarantees.''

Egypt has mediated previous ceasefire deals between Israel and Hamas, the latest of which?unraveled?with recent violence.

Key players in the Israel-Gaza cross-border conflict

A Palestinian official told Reuters the truce discussions would continue in Cairo on Sunday, saying "there is hope,'' but it was too early to say whether the efforts would succeed.

In Jerusalem, an Israeli official declined to comment on the negotiations. Military commanders said Israel was prepared to fight on to achieve a goal of halting rocket fire from Gaza, which has plagued Israeli towns since late 2000, when failed peace talks led to the outbreak of a Palestinian uprising.

NBC's Mike Viqueira and Martin Fletcher report on the latest developments in the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and each weigh in on what role the US would play in a possible ground offensive by Israel into Gaza.

Diplomats at the United Nations said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to visit Israel and Egypt in the coming week to push for an end to the fighting.

Ground offensive
Israel, with tanks and artillery positioned along the frontier, said it was still weighing a ground offensive.?

Israeli cabinet ministers decided on Friday to more than double the current reserve troop quota set for the Gaza offensive to 75,000 and around 16,000 reservists have already been called up.

Asked by reporters whether a ground operation was possible, Maj.-Gen. Tal Russo, commander of the Israeli forces on the Gaza frontier, said: "Definitely.''

Rockets from Gaza fired on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem

?We have a plan. ... It will take time. We need to have patience. It won't be a day or two,'' he added.

NBC's Martin Fletcher and Richard Engle report from Tel Aviv and Gaza, where violence is ramping up with Palestinians firing rockets into Israel and Israel's military attacking Hamas symbols of power such as the prime minister's office and police headquarters.

A possible move into the densely populated Gaza Strip and the risk of major casualties it brings would be a significant gamble for Netanyahu, favoured to win a January election.

The last Gaza war, a three-week Israeli blitz and invasion over the New Year of 2008-09, killed 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians. Thirteen Israelis died in the conflict.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Tennessee Volunteers logo

Lowlights of Lane Kiffin?s one year in Knoxville keep coming back to bite Tennessee right in the keister.

The NCAA?s?Committee on Infractions announced in a release Friday additional penalties levied against Tennessee dating back to recruiting violations committed by former Vols assistant?Willie Mack Garza.?Per the release, those penalties include:

  • A two-year extension of the probation issued during the 2011 infractions case
  • A reduction in official visits from 51 to 47 for the 2012-13 academic year
  • A reduction in evaluation days during the spring 2012 evaluation period (completed)
  • No complementary tickets to prospective student-athletes during unofficial visits for the first two conference games of the 2013 season

The university met with the COI last month for an expedited penalty hearing on an agreed upon summary disposition report submitted this past June.

?We will finally close the chapter on the prior actions of members of a previous football coaching staff,? UT athletic director Dave Hart said in a statement. ?We have significantly strengthened our culture of compliance at Tennessee and will continue to do so. We disagree with additional penalties for a matter we believed should have been part of the previous case. We will now move forward.?

Garza left Tennessee to take an assistant coaching job at USC under Kiffin. He?s since resigned from that position in the wake of more allegations connecting him to scouting service owner Willie Lyles. As a surprise to absolutely no one, Tennessee?s additional penalties come courtesy of the relationship Garza had with Lyles.

According to the release, ?In the facts agreed upon by the University, the NCAA and Garza, during the summer of 2009, Garza reimbursed Will Lyles, an individual associated with prospect Lache Seastrunk, for airfare and hotel expenses associated with an unofficial visit for Seastrunk and his mother to the University. Because Lyles arranged the trip for Seastrunk, the NCAA classified him as a booster of the University.?

Seastrunk and Lyles have been connected to possible NCAA violations at Oregon. Seastrunk has since transferred to Baylor.

Ohio Exotic Pets Legislation May Have Unintended Consequences ...

Posted: November 15, 2012

dave sagan hocking woods nature center

Ohio?s exotic pet legislation was stopped in its tracks last week when a federal lawsuit was filed by four animal owners. An injunction prevents the Ohio Dangerous Exotic Pets Act from being implemented until a hearing on filers? claims is held.

The exotic animals lawsuit reportedly maintains that it is a violation of Constitutional rights to remove ?property? if the exotic animal owners do not comply with the new regulations. The legal challenge was issued on the eve of the deadline to register dangerous exotic pets with the state.

The Inquisitr sat down with Hocking Woods Nature Center Director Dave Sagan to find out why some animal educators are opposed to the new dangerous exotic pet legislation.

IQ ? How will the pending Ohio exotic pet legislation impact the educational work you do at Hocking College and with the public?

Sagan ? The 12 foot restricted snake rule is an arbitrary ?out of the hat? rule that was put forth by someone who is phobic of snakes, not for any real reason beyond neurotic fear. I have four pythons over 12 feet and they are all gentle and nice. These animals have been touched by tens of thousands of people, and now I cannot use them solely based on length? Show me the research or data that supports this?

IQ ? What parts of the law do you consider necessary to help protect both the exotic animals and the public?

Sagan ? The public safety argument is for people who are content with their ignorance?s and fears. The more than 30 animals that were released, not escaped, released, near Zanesville last year were all killed in a matter or hours by law enforcement. There is no measurable public safety issue here, just the overall perception of one, and of course, a very easy one to sell to the public. Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my. Besides, requiring a name of a veterinarian, there is very little about care and protection of animals.

IQ ? If you could alter portions of the exotic pets statute, what changes would you make?

Sagan ? Most of it would go, but ? have specific requirements that address the animals captive care and management with the animals well-being in mind, and draw these up for the kinds of animals they are, instead of lumping all this together. Large cats and bears have more in common with dogs, than they do with pythons.

IQ ? What exactly does the pending lawsuit seek to stop or amend in the passed legislation?

Sagan ? The new law was very poorly written. It was originally put forth as SB 45 back in the 07-08 session and it confusing, discriminatory, overly punitive, and very heavy handed on regulations. It went nowhere. It was a turd. When Zanesville happened, that turd was polished to a shine and became law. I believe the Governor wanted something in place ASAP. The current laws are being picked apart on dozens of legal points, which means, we are more than likely going to have to do this all again. Maybe this time they will actually listen.

The Hocking Woods Nature Center features an interpretive building, wildlife habitats, ponds, walkways, and feed stations. The staff and students offer seasonal programming for the public, groups of school children, and scout troops. Students in the college?s Natural and Historical Interpretation program use the Center to design activities, learn about the eco-system, and provide care for injured birds in the Raptor Rehab Center.

Photographer Robert Landau started documenting the billboards of LA?s Sunset Strip in the 1970s, and has published a book collecting together images of some of the most iconic LA billboards of the 70s and 80s.

In his latest publication photographer Robert Landau recalls a time when rock ?n? roll billboards dominated LA?s Sunset Strip. Moving from the early 70s and into the late 80s, the book collects together images from some of the greats, including The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones.

Landau emphasises the level of craftsmanship that went into creating such huge billboards, with a team of illustrators, typographers, retouchers and painters ? amongst others ? responsible for getting the billboards ready for final installation. Outdoor advertising companies often employed artists to hand paint billboards, which were referred to as ?spectaculars?. The book also documents some of the more extravagant creations, including ELO?s $50,000 billboard from 1977, which featured a custom-made neon space station.

X Factor: 5 Stocks Reaching Their Ex-Dividend Date On November ...

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL Many stocks will reach their ex-dividend date next Tuesday, which is significant for investors as the seller of the stock on that date, not the buyer, receives the most recent dividend.

A stock must be bought one day before the ex-dividend date to claim any dividends that have been announced but not yet paid. The company determines on the record date, which usually occurs two days after the ex-dividend date, which shareholders qualify for the dividend. Shareholders listed as holders of record after the record date then receive their dividend on the date of payment established by the company. Those purchasing right before the record date forfeit the dividend and normally get the stock for a reduced amount.

It may seem an anachronism in this era of high frequency trading, but the dividend rate rules are in force since it can still take up to three business days for transactions to be credited to and settled in an investor?s account.

Below are five stocks that schedule November 20 as their ex-dividend date. All annual yields are estimated.

3M (NYSE:MMM) yields 2.68% annually and has a market cap of $61.20 billion. 3M operates as a diversified technology company worldwide. The company's Industrial and Transportation segment offers tapes, coated and non-woven abrasives, adhesives, specialty materials, filtration products, energy control products, closure systems for personal hygiene products, acoustic systems products, and components and products used in the automotive, marine, aircraft, and specialty vehicles. It will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.59 on December 12, and its quarterly yield will be 0.67% based on yesterday?s closing price of $88.02. The company has paid a quarterly dividend since 1977, and each dividend payment has either increased or remained the same from the prior quarter.

Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) yields 2.67% annually and has market cap of $29.44 billion. The global cruise and vacation company will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.25 on December 14, and its quarterly yield will be 0.67% based on yesterday?s closing price of $37.39. The company has paid a quarterly dividend since 1994, and the dividend is down from a high of $0.40 in 2008.

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) yields 2.59% annually and has a market cap $7.11 billion. NVIDIA Corporation provides graphics chips for use in smartphones, personal computers (PCs), tablets, and professional workstations markets worldwide. It will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.075 on December 14, and its quarterly yield will be 0.65% based on yesterday's closing price of $11.59. This will be company?s second dividend payment.

No positions in stocks mentioned.

Obama views Sandy recovery in aerial tour of NYC

NEW YORK (AP) ? President Barack Obama got his first look Thursday at the devastation that Superstorm Sandy waged on New York City, with a helicopter tour above flood-ravaged and burned-out sections of Queens and Staten Island.

Two and a half weeks after the massive East Coast storm displaced New Yorkers, thousands of whom remain without power, Obama took an aerial tour that included Breezy Point, a waterfront community in Queens where roughly 100 homes were burned in a massive fire. Below Marine One, blue tarps covered some homes instead of roofs and debris was scattered across neighborhoods still drying out after the storm.

"The storm passes and sometimes attention turns elsewhere," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters traveling with the president aboard Air Force One. "But the fact is there's a lot of work that still needs to be done."

After the helicopter tour, Obama met with people waiting in line at an emergency response center at Staten Island's New Dorp High School, where the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Small Business Administration, IRS, Red Cross and city agencies have tents to help survivors. The White House said about 1,500 people had received services at the center, one of several in affected areas, as of Monday.

"Warming buses" were available for people to take refuge from the cold and hot showers were provided by the New York Fire Department. Insurance companies including Travelers and Allstate also had buses to take claims.

Obama was joined by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan.

Cuomo said earlier this week he plans to request $30 billion in federal aid to rebuild, including for improvements such as the construction of a power grid meant to buttress utilities' ability to find and fix outages. It would also upgrade New York City's fuel supply capacity to help prevent consumer shortages and bring new oil and gas pipelines from New England to reduce dependence on shipping the fuel. Long lines at gas stations led to alternate-day rationing in both New York and New Jersey after the storm.

Carney said the administration still hasn't received details of that request so he couldn't respond to it specifically. He said the federal government will continue to do everything it can to cut red tape and help affected communities rebuild.

Obama also planned to take a walking tour of a neighborhood affected by the storm. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both New York Democrats, traveled with the president aboard Air Force One.

Obama traveled to New Jersey on Oct. 31 to meet with Gov. Chris Christie and view recovery efforts in coastal communities. He viewed flattened houses, flooded neighborhoods, sand-strewn streets and a still-burning fire along the state's battered coastline. Parts of the New Jersey shore's famed boardwalks were missing.

The White House said the president didn't visit New York then because he did not want to interfere with recovery efforts.

lines and colors :: a blog about drawing, painting, illustration, comics ...

Lebbeus Woods
Lebbeus Woods was a visionary experimental architect whose designs, though they were seldom realized as actual structures, were tremendously influential on a generation of architects.

His work took on concepts generally considered beyond the purview of architecture, exploring aspects of life and human society as well as the nature of space as defined by structures ? and the way humans exist within current and imagined realities.

Woods produced wonderful drawings, both of his visionary projects, such as his design for ?Einstein?s Tomb? as an orbiting space station (above, top) and his unique take on extant structures, like his remarkable imagining of Manhattan as a plateau above a deep gorge in the New York bedrock.

Woods died in October this year at the age of 72.

There is an official site and blog, but it?s not that easy to find his drawings. A better source is this gallery exhibition at Friedman Benda gallery from earlier this year, as well as some of the articles on Bldg Blog and others sources listed below.

(AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is lobbying business and labor groups to support his plan to avoid an impending fiscal cliff, telling the two sides he remains committed to requiring the wealthy to pay more in taxes.

Obama was meeting Wednesday with about a dozen business executives as the White House and Congress face a series of expiring tax cuts and across-the-board spending cuts scheduled to take effect because lawmakers failed to reach a deal to reduce the federal debt. Business groups want an agreement before the end of the year, warning that the uncertainty could roil the financial markets and harm the economic recovery.

The White House meeting follows a gathering of labor leaders and liberal groups Tuesday in which participants said Obama remained clear that he would push for his campaign pledge of making the wealthiest Americans pay more in taxes.

"We're prepared to stand up to make sure there is shared sacrifice here, so the rich actually start paying their fair share and the middle class don't get soaked for that," said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

Obama was expected to speak in greater detail on the year-ending lame-duck session of Congress at a White House news conference Wednesday. Failure to act would lead to spending cuts and higher taxes on all Americans, with middle-income families paying an average of about $2,000 more next year, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

The president pledged to raise taxes on the rich during his first term but backed off his stance in late 2010 after Republicans seized control of the House in the midterm election. During his meeting with labor leaders, Obama said he was not going to bend on letting tax cuts expire for top wage earners, according to a participant in the meeting who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private session. The president said the tax issue was clear during the election and said he had extended those enacted during the George W. Bush administration once and would not do so again, the participant said.

The CEOs have urged Congress to extend the Bush-era tax cuts until a tax overhaul can be reached and prevent the spending cuts from taking place. The executives say the uncertainty over the fiscal cliff is hurting the nation's business climate and preventing hiring.

Obama will meet with several CEOs, including the heads of Aetna, Honeywell, Wal-Mart, Procter & Gamble and Ford.

The participants include members of the Campaign to Fix the Debt, a group founded by Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles that has pushed for a long-term plan to fix the nation's debt and deficits.

Simpson, a former Wyoming senator, and Bowles, a former White House chief of staff, served as co-chairs of Obama's bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which proposed $3 in spending cuts for every $1 in additional revenues.

Among the CEOs attending the meeting are General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt, who chairs Obama's jobs council, and American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault and Xerox CEO Ursula Burns, who are members of the council.

New Art Exhibitions Showcase University Professors

Melissa Haviland?s artwork, ?A Host of Options,? showcases her admiration for gendered items, such as teacups. (UW Photo)

Tsehai Johnson and Melissa Haviland?s ceramic and printmaking exhibitions can be seen Nov. 16-Dec. 14 at the University of Wyoming Visual Arts Gallery, located on the corner of 22nd Street and Willett Drive. The opening reception is scheduled Friday, Nov. 16, from 6-8 p.m.

The exhibitions and reception are free and open to the public.

Johnson is a Colorado-based artist who explores the boundaries between public and private life. Through porcelain objects, interactive installations and mixed-media wall pieces, she references dense ornamentation while also exploring the disorder of everyday life. An assistant professor in the Metropolitan State College of Denver Art Department, Johnson recently was awarded an Art in Architecture commission for Denver?s Rogers Federal Building.

Haviland?s artwork explores lineage, ritual and practice within objects that are gendered and classed, such as fine china, which have both feminine and upper-class connotations. An artist-printmaker living in Athens, Ohio, she received her master of fine arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and bachelor of fine arts from Illinois State University. She currently teaches printmaking, drawing and papermaking at Ohio University.

The Visual Arts Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m-5 p.m.

Why Are Some Keywords More Competitive Than Others? - Name.com

WHY ARE SOME KEYWORDS MORE COMPETITIVE THAN OTHERS?

?

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."

- -Animal Farm

You want to be number one. Your mama said you should be number one. So why do does your site show up on page 12,492 of the search results?

Keywords.

Some keywords are just more equal. You may have the most SEO'd page in the world, passing even the Panda and Penguin updates without a scratch, but that won't rank you anywhere near the first page of results unless you can track down the keywords that fit your business model.

Let's say you own a pet shop. "Pets" (over 13 million searches last month according to Google Adwords) will grab everything from tiny sea monkey insurance premiums to python diet plans. "Pet shops" (2 million searches) will bring you yard sales for bunny babies and emu egg investment scams. "pet shops online" (165K searches) features electronic pet forums in Japan and circus bear warehouse support in Belarus. A keyword phrase like "pet shops online that deliver same day to San Francisco Bay area" narrows it down a bit, but now you've got a string of keywords that will be searched exactly once a decade and a sales conversion rate of 0.00%.

You need to discover the most competitive keywords for your specific strengths so that your SEO can deliver the right traffic, i.e. searchers who won't just bounce away in irritation at the irrelevant results.

The big problem is that keywords have no inherent value. Like stocks, their value fluctuates day-to-day, often second-by-second. Without tranquilizing them and putting a tag in their ears, you don't know where your keywords are headed tomorrow. And you can't re-optimize your website for new keywords every time the search trends cycle around.

So to get long-term, meaningful data you have to aggregate the values over time. ?The amount of time you need is exactly what most businesses don't have. ?You may need new sales for some fast cash flow to survive or you may operate a company where the revenues are zeitgeist dependant, like an online delivery service for pet bats trying to capitalize on the release of The Dark Knight Rises in July.

SEO tools

So many businesses turn to the free SEO analysis tools available from the major search engines. When you bump up against the limits of these free services you can get more detailed reports with SEO software suites or subscription sites like?SEOMoz.

Many of these services offer a tool that checks ranking difficulty. You enter the keywords you want, and they tell you how impossible it is going to be to get a decent rank based on your company size. ?To determine how competitive a specific term or keyword phrase may be, they use data like:

  1. total number of searches per month
  2. searches in quotes (exact searches)
  3. searches with allintitle (keywords appear in the website's title)
  4. searches with inanchor (the url itself contains the keyword, a good indication that the entire site is dedicated to whatever you are searching about)
  5. highest PageRank of the top sites
  6. total links pointing to the those site
  7. maximum bid price for those and related keywords
  8. total ads using closely related keywords

Pay special attention to the PageRank and total number of links. Since link farms have been attacked pretty consistently by search engine spiders, the number of links is a good indication of how long your competition has been sitting on this keyword.

Take the advice of?Sun Tzu: the best way to win is not to fight. Go around your competition and gobble up the under-served markets. This motion generates its own momentum in terms of market share.

Securing the appropriate keywords, specific enough to get you to page 1 but competitive enough to get a decent audience, is of vital importance to the health of your online presence. Don't skimp on this decision in terms of money or time. ?Once you are comfortable with what your front-end search is doing, you should really take a look at your back-end.

Let's talk about your long tail?

Long tail represents the vast majority of search results. Maybe 10% or 20% of the people searching for a business like yours will be exactly the keywords you have prepared for. The rest are rare or even one-of-a-kind searches that find your site by a lucky accident. ?Although small individually, the accumulations can add up to a flock of new business.

?

For example, let's say your site sells all kinds of stuff featuring the iconic bird of paradise --BOP.net. ?Naturally, you will optimize your site for "bird of paradise," but you must be creative in imagining other ways people will try to find what you offer. ?Long tail searches could include "New Guinea birds" or "paradise sicklebill" or even "birds with long tails" among the infinite possibilities.

How do you deal with all this uncertainty. Many businesses don't even try. They put they're time and money on battling the big guys for the 20% and leave the thorny complexity of the 80% alone. ?But there is a strategy to capturing long tail (without?putting salt?on it).

World-building

The secret is seeding your potential customer searches through fans, followers and dedicated communities. ?Forums are great places for millions of variations on the theme of your business to be planted on your website by people who think like your prospects. Hosted blogs with plenty of guests and crosstalk in comments is another reliable source. You can also farm out a host of white papers on issues related to your industry to gain some fresh ideas and terms describing your core business.

Another great point about this approach that search engines treat this as natural or organic SEO, which is what crawlers are looking for more than ever. Sites with keyword stuffing and poor content took an enormous ranking hit with the?last round of updates.

At the end of all this, you will have a solid delivery device for pre-interested and motivated traffic to keep an animal house full of prospects coming to your site every month. Keeping them there long enough to buy something is a completely different problem.

Shaping a security team, Obama's challenge deepens

(AP) ? Barely a week after winning re-election, President Barack Obama suddenly confronts a deepening challenge in assembling a new national security team, his task complicated by a scandal that has cost him a CIA chief and raised doubts about his Afghanistan war commander.

Hard questions from Congress, potentially bitter confirmation hearings and a scandal of infidelity and inappropriate emails are suddenly shaping the fight ahead. The White House portrayed a president focused on the economy and confident in his military and intelligence leadership, but clearly not thrilled.

When asked if the personnel troubles were an unwelcome distraction, presidential spokesman Jay Carney said: "I certainly wouldn't call it welcome."

Obama was already expecting to have to replace his chief diplomat, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and perhaps his defense secretary, Leon Panetta. Those two alone ? plus Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who is also leaving ? help shape Obama's thinking and represent him before the world.

Now Obama is without his CIA director, David Petraeus, the once acclaimed military general in Iraq and Afghanistan who resigned in disgrace last week over an extramarital affair.

The details of that scandal keep expanding Tuesday, including the revelation that the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, is under investigation by the Pentagon for potentially inappropriate communications with another woman in the case. That, in turn, has frozen Allen's nomination to be the next commander of U.S. European Command and the commander of NATO forces in Europe, which casts more doubt about a military leadership in which each move affects another.

"It's a hard moment for the administration," said Joshua Rovner, an associate professor of strategy and policy at the U.S. Naval War College in Rhode Island. "It certainly wasn't expected, but if anything good comes out of it, they do have a chance to take a long, hard look at strategy."

He noted that Petraeus had taken on such revered status for his military career that he won confirmation as CIA chief with little scrutiny.

Even beyond the surprise difficulties, Obama could have trouble with the rest of his high-stakes turnover.

When Clinton leaves, a favorite to replace her is Susan Rice, an Obama loyalist who serves as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. She could face a bruising confirmation hearing given that she was the first face of the administration's maligned explanation of the fatal attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

"She's clearly going to have a little more difficult time than she would have if she hadn't gone out on all those talk shows," said Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., the second-ranking Senate Republican. Kyl is retiring at year's end and likely would not get a vote on Rice, but he said: "As of right now, I wouldn't support her."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said Rice could have a difficult time winning confirmation, although he didn't take a position.

"I'm concerned about the fact that she went on Sunday shows and said it was the product of a spontaneous uprising as opposed to a terrorist attack. Why did they wait so long to publicly ...change their position on it? I think she'd have to answer questions about that, no doubt about it."

Some of Rice's key advocates predict Republican lawmakers would not have the inclination or the votes to try to block Obama from appointing the State Department chief he wants. Yet others expect her confirmation hearing to be contentious and are wary of picking that fight at the start of the second term.

The other top candidate for the State job is Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, who is expected to be confirmed easily by his chamber colleagues. His departure from the Senate, though, could potentially cost Obama's party a seat by creating an opening for the man who just lost the other Senate seat, Scott Brown.

The idea of Kerry as defense secretary, which has also been floated, is not one that he has expressed an interest in, according to people close to him.

For Obama, the post-election period was intended to focus on starting to enact the economic agenda at the core of his re-election bid. He and Congress are in the hunt for elusive compromise before Jan. 1 if they are to avoid a huge package of tax increases and spending cuts that could derail the economic recovery.

Obama is, in fact, pursuing that course. But a story involving sex, resignations, national security and congressional oversight has a way of grabbing attention.

Carney, the president's spokesman, characterized the cases of Petraeus and Allen as individual matters that reflected no broader theme or challenge.

"I really would ask you to not extrapolate broadly," Carney told reporters. "The president has great confidence in the military, great confidence in his commanders, and will continue to have that confidence."

That expression of confidence extends to Allen, which is significant given the state of America's longest war. Allen is due soon to give Panetta a recommendation on the pace of U.S. troop withdrawals in 2013; about 68,000 U.S. troops are still serving in a war that is on pace to continue until the end of 2014.

How long Panetta himself will lead the defense agency is yet another unknown for Obama. The Pentagon chief Panetta recently has indicated a willingness to stay on for at least some of Obama's second-term.

When asked whether he would rule out staying for all of Obama's second term, Panetta said: "Who the hell knows?"
