A Reboot Of The Witchy TV Series ‘Charmed’ Is Reportedly In The Works

YES, PLEASE!

Now that witches are all the rage these days, we learn that CBS is reportedly working on a reboot of the long-running supernatural series Charmed. According to a new report out today, this new version of Charmed will be a “re-imagined” version of the series that featured 3 sister witches who worked together (tho sometimes in conflict with one another) to save the world from various baddies. Inspired by the success of the 1996 film The Craft and the TV success of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed ran for 8 seasons (one season longer than BtVS) from 1998-2006. Considering how popular shows like American Horror Story: Coven are these days, it makes perfect sense for a show like Charmed to find new life.

TV’s No. 1 network may be ready to conjure up the Power of Three: Vulture has learned that a remake of the hit Aaron Spelling–produced WB drama Charmed is in the works at CBS. Details are scant right now, but Party of Five co-creator Chris Keyser and partner Syndey Sidner are co-writing the project, which insiders describe as a “re-imagining” of the original series about a sisterhood of witches who use their powers for good. CBS TV Studios, which has the rights to all of the Spelling library, is producing the project alongside the Tannenbaum Company. It’s still very early in the development process: CBS has only ordered a script for a pilot, and it hasn’t committed to filming anything. As Wonder Woman fans will attest, a pilot script does not a revival make. But it’s not hard to see why this reboot is being put together … American Horror Story: Coven has been massive this fall; Lifetime is doing okay ratings with the Charmed- inspired Witches of East End; Once Upon a Time is ABC’s biggest Sunday hit; and NBC’s Grimm has been one of the network’s few success stories in recent years. Charmed was also one of the now-defunct WB Network’s longest and most successful series: Starring Alyssa Milano, Rose McGowan, Holly Marie Combs, and, for a while, Shannen Doherty, it ran for eight seasons and 178 episodes. And even though it left the air more than seven years ago, repeats still air on both TNT and WE. Also: A report last year said Charmed was the second most binged show on Netflix.

I am a HUGE fan of Charmed and I would LOVE to see the show revived for a new generation. Altho Buffy the Vampire Slayer will always have my heart, Charmed filled the void when Buffy went off the air. Some of my most prized pop culture possessions are Charmed related. I have the Book of Shadows box set of the entire series on DVD, a full size replica of the Charmed Spirit Board and a full size replica of the actual Book of Shadows as featured on the series. OMG. I can’t even tell you. I am LIVING for every second of AHS: Coven this season and tomorrow night, I’m seeing a screening of The Craft at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I don’t want to get too excited just yet but I’m hopeful that Charmed will live again. Any fans of the show out there? Tell me how excited (or not) you may be about the prospect of the return of Charmed to the TV airwaves.
