(AP) ? An ex-Marine who had suffered from depression and once tweeted about killing "everyone I see" opened fire in camouflage gear at a New Jersey supermarket, gunning down two co-workers before he killed himself, authorities said.

Terence Tyler, 23, left his night clerk shift at a Pathmark store in Old Bridge Township around 3:30 a.m., drove off and returned 20 minutes later to the closed store with a handgun and an assault rifle similar to an AK-47, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said. About 12 to 14 workers were still there, inputting new prices into the computer.

Tyler fired more than 16 rounds from his rifle ? shooting at an employee standing outside and firing as he entered the store, blowing out the front windows, authorities said. He shot at five other workers in an aisle, killing Christina LoBrutto, 18, and Bryan Breen, 24, Kaplan said.

"I do not believe that they were specifically targeted. I believe everybody in the store was a target," said Kaplan.

Tyler, who began working at the supermarket less than two weeks ago, drew his handgun and killed himself, the prosecutor said.

The motive was under investigation. But family members said Tyler had been discharged from the Marines two years ago after suffering from depression and had never gotten over his mother's death; the shooting happened around the five-year anniversary of her death, they said.

And on a Twitter account in 2009, with a photograph identified by family members as Tyler, a post talks about hating Marine life.

"I'm starting to see why plp go on killin sprees," he wrote in October 2009, using the handle (at)Tylerbkstyle. And these (obscenity) are reeeeeeally pushin my kill everyone I see button."

At the top of Tyler's Facebook page reads the motto, "Be optimistic. All the people you hate are going to eventually die."

Kaplan and police walked through the shooting scene at the supermarket Friday morning, with two long windows in the front completely shot through. Evidence markers were placed next to broken glass outside the store, in a suburban shopping center about 40 miles south of Manhattan. Several ammunition magazines were recovered along with Tyler's rifle and a .45-caliber handgun, he said.

John Niccollai, president of a foodworkers union, said many of the employees working escaped the gunfire when an assistant manager got many of them to flee out the back door.

Breen and LoBrutto were both cashiers who normally worked day shifts, but pulled overnight shifts every few weeks to input new price changes, Niccollai said. Tyler began just worked for Pathmark since Aug. 20 as a night clerk stocking shelves.

Pathmark worker Miranda Miranda said she steered clear of Tyler. "The way he looked at me, he gave me an uneasy vibe," she said.

Miranda had regularly worked the overnight shift on Thursday but said LoBrutto agreed to take over the shift for her a few weeks ago. "That could've been me," she said of LoBrutto.

Tyler was discharged from the Marines in 2010 after just under two years in the service in Twentynine Palms, Calif., the Marines said. The infantryman from New York City never served overseas, said Marine spokeswoman Capt. Kendra Motz. She wouldn't comment on the circumstances of his discharge.

His uncle, Christopher Dyson, said he left after suffering from depression, and a cousin said he had been hospitalized and was never happy with the Marines. Tyler, who also lived in San Diego, left California in June to move to New Jersey, where he lived with his sister and uncle.

"He was a quiet cat, you know?" Dyson said. "We don't know anything that would compel him to do this."

His cousin, Shanteya Dyson said Tyler had not been the same since his mother died of cancer. His father died when he was young.

"That was his best friend. He was always a quiet guy. But he got more quiet. He really didn't speak at all. He was just blank," said Dyson.

Tyler spent the July 4 weekend drinking at Jersey shore bars with Manase Acheantong, who said Tyler was his friend's cousin.

"We went out. We had drinks. He was a normal kid. He didn't start no fights. He didn't seem crazy," said Acheantong, 25, of Old Bridge.

Pathmark's parent company, Montvale-based Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. said Friday the company is "deeply saddened" by the shooting and is cooperating with investigators.

A vigil was planned Friday at Old Bridge School for LoBrutto and Breen, who both graduated from the school. LoBrutto, who was a horn player in the school band, graduated this year, Schools Superintendent Timothy Brennan said. Breen graduated in 2006.

Jessica Ruano knew Christina from school. "She was a really bubbly girl," said Ruano, 16. "She was silly. She was sweet."

What to Pack? Moving Your Parents to an Elder Care Home.

photo credit: MelvinSchlubman via photo pin cc

Preparing your elderly parents for an upcoming move to an elderly home facility is a stressful process. You can make the move easier on your parents by helping them to pack their most important and beloved items, in addition to the necessities they will need for daily living. Collecting favorite treasures to bring will help your parents transition comfortably into their new living arrangement.

Favorite Pictures

Packing and bringing treasured pictures will help your parents feel more at home in their new living space. These pictures will bring back happy memories and remind your parents of the people they love. Frame favorite pictures for quick display once your parents arrive at the facility. Other pictures can go into photo albums for browsing at any time. You may also want to consider digitally scanning these pictures so your parents won?t have to store bulky albums in a small living space.

Precious Mementos

Your parents probably have a variety of precious mementos that evoke pleasant memories. These might include trophies, vacation souvenirs, handmade art and other miscellaneous items. Mementos also make a care facility feel more like a home. If your parents have a variety of prized possessions that cannot fit in the facility?s living space, store them at your home or rent a storage space. Your parents may also have a variety of papers that hold no obvious value but mean the world to them. If possible, go through some of these possessions ahead of time to consolidate and reduce unwanted items.

Clothes and Personal Care Items

Moving your parents to an elderly home presents a good opportunity to go through your parent?s clothes with them. Donate any unwanted items and purchase new clothes if needed. You can help your parents create a collection of personal care items, including their favorite soaps, deodorants, shampoo and more. Pack other miscellaneous items, including alarm clocks and wall decorations. Each item from home will help your parents feel comfortable in the care facility.

What to Donate?

Depending on the circumstances and health of your elderly parents, you may wish to donate some of their possessions. If your parent?s room in their new care facility does not require any additional furniture, ask your relatives if anyone else in the family could use your parent?s old furniture. You can rent a storage facility for the furniture if it is not needed immediately. If no one wants the furniture, consider donating it to a charity organization.

HRchitect Closes First Half of 2012 with Record Results | HRchitect

HRchitect, the leader in end-to-end HR systems strategic consulting and the premier Human Capital Management (HCM) and Talent Management systems consulting firm reported a remarkable first-half of 2012 with an increase in revenue and project engagements that has surpassed projected goals by nearly 25%.

Financial Overview
HRchitect has also witnessed a nearly 35% increase of new client engagements as organizations continue to understand how to best manage talent through the use of technology. The driving financial success of 2012 year-to-date is also attributable to an influx of project engagements from existing signature clients, who identified a greater need to improve and streamline their Talent Management processes.

Industry Trends
The areas that have contributed most to HRchitect?s rapid growth are HR systems strategic planning and implementation-related projects. The industry continues to experience tremendous growth with organizations implementing new systems in record numbers? In the first-half of the year, some of the new clients that HRchitect has performed services for are Braun, Cerner Corp., Fujitsu Network Communications, General Atomics, Henry Schein, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mozilla Corporation, Novo Nordisk, Regus Management Group, Republic Services, Valparaiso University, and many others. As has been the case every year since HRchitect started, many Texas-based organizations such as the North Central Texas Council of Governments, DRG Texas, Brinker International Restaurants, Energy Future Holdings, Zachry Corporation, Stage Stores Inc., Shermco, and many others have joined the growing list of clients that HRchitect services.

?This is an exciting time for HRchitect as we thrived in a down economy over the past couple of years and we are growing even faster now that the economy continues to show signs of improvement,? stated Matt Lafata, President of HRchitect. ?More organizations are willing to open their budgets and request HRchitect to help them understand the puzzling world of HR technology and how it can benefit their organization. In addition, the old adage that Texas companies love to do business with Texas companies certainly holds true as we continue to do more business in Texas than any other state.?

Repeat Business from Signature Clients
?Our ?Customer for Life? philosophy isn?t just something we talk about; we live it day in and day out,? stated Matt Lafata. ?We don?t want to do just one project for an organization and move on. We want to help organizations transform the way they attract, retain and manage people by building multi-year relationships with our clients and being intimately involved every step of the way.?

Lafata added, ?This is reflected in the fact that our clients come back to us, time and time again, before making any kind of decision around HR and talent management processes and/or technologies.?

HRchitect holds long-lasting relationships with many of their clients, and continually works on projects for some of their signature clients. Some of those who requested additional services from HRchitect in the first half of 2012 include 3M, Autodesk, Baker Hughes, Hyatt, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Labs, Kindred Healthcare, Monsanto, National Oilwell Varco, Sony Computer Entertainment, and many others.

Matt Lafata continued, ?As we continue to work with our signature clients, we are enthusiastically accepting new project engagements in record numbers from organizations struggling to find the expertise needed to help them make the right decisions around HR and Talent Management technology,? said Lafata. As a result of the increase in projects, HRchitect continues to add additional staff to accommodate their clients? business needs.

Educational Programs
HRchitect continues to educate professionals in the HR technology industry by posting pertinent information on their blogs: HRtechnologyvendornews.com and the puzzlingworldoftechnology.com, as well as delivering educational content via web and in-person seminars. The HR technology Happy Hour WebMingle is a popular web radio show that is hosted by Matt Lafata & Tiffany Appleby. Every show feature guests from the HR industry, as they discuss current news and trends affecting business in HR. Upcoming shows will feature guests from HealthcareSource, Kenexa High Performance Institute (the R & D arm of Kenexa), cfactor, WorkForce Software and many others. The full schedule of educational events is available via HRchitect.com and archives of previous sessions along with whitepapers and vendor profiles are stored in the Industry Intelligence forum and available for download.

Tiffany Appleby, VP of Marketing and Strategic Alliances, who was honored this year as one of the ?40 Under 40? in Collin County stated, ?We take pride in helping to educate and share findings with the HR community that we consider relevant to HR professionals in their daily lives. The hope is that with the bits of pertinent information they gather from us, they will be better informed in making the right decisions regarding their HCM systems and processes which in turn will help them to gain a positive impact on their people and their businesses.?

As HRchitect proceeds on to the last-half of 2012, they are working at a steady pace for closing the year on yet another positive note.

Saturn and its largest moon reflect their true colors

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Posing for portraits for NASA's Cassini spacecraft, Saturn and its largest moon, Titan, show spectacular colors in a quartet of images being released today. One image captures the changing hues of Saturn's northern and southern hemispheres as they pass from one season to the next.

The images can be found at http://www.nasa.gov/cassini,http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and http://ciclops.org .

A wide-angle view in today's package captures Titan passing in front of Saturn, as well as the planet's changing colors. Upon Cassini's arrival at Saturn eight years ago, Saturn's northern winter hemisphere was an azure blue. Now that winter is encroaching on the planet's southern hemisphere and summer on the north, the color scheme is reversing: blue is tinting the southern atmosphere and is fading from the north.

The other three images depict the newly discovered south polar vortex in the atmosphere of Titan, reported recently by Cassini scientists. Cassini's visible-light cameras have seen a concentration of yellowish haze in the detached haze layer at the south pole of Titan since at least March 27. Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer spotted the massing of clouds around the south pole as early as May 22 in infrared wavelengths. After a June 27 flyby of the moon, Cassini released a dramatic image and movie showing the vortex rotating faster than the moon's rotation period. The four images being released today were acquired in May, June and July of 2012.

Some of these views, such as those of the polar vortex, are only possible because Cassini's newly inclined -- or tilted -- orbits allow more direct viewing of the polar regions of Saturn and its moons.

Scientists are looking forward to seeing more of the same -- new phenomena like Titan's south polar vortex and changes wrought by the passage of time and seasons -- during the remainder of Cassini's mission.

"Cassini has been in orbit now for the last eight years, and despite the fact that we can't know exactly what the next five years will show us, we can be certain that whatever it is will be wondrous," said Carolyn Porco, imaging team lead based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Launched in 1997, Cassini went into orbit around Saturn on July 1, 2004. It is in its second mission extension, known as the Solstice Mission, and one of its main goals is to analyze seasonal changes in the Saturn system.

"It is so fantastic to experience, through the instruments of Cassini, seasonal changes in the Saturn system," said Amanda Hendrix, deputy project scientist, based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Some of the changes we see in the data are completely unexpected, while some occur like clockwork on a seasonal timescale. It's an exciting time to be at Saturn."

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Sophisticated family - Home Design, Decorating and Remodeling ...

? ?
 ? ? ? ??
 ? &nbsp

This space began as a small enclosed kitchen attached to an equally small dining room. Opening up the space was appealing to kitchen designer Grant Gettens of Ellis Creek Kitchens and his wife Riley and two boys Chay, 5 and Jase, 7. Grant tells the story of how and why he transformed his own kitchen.

Rather than have two small spaces, we combined the space with one big island that would serve multiple functions. The idea was to make room for cooking and prepping meals as well as a comfortable place to sit around for mealtime. While entertaining there is plenty of room for everyone to hang out in the kitchen. Meals are often outside in the summer.

Sophisticated familyOn the working side of the island, two wide drawer units on casters roll out to the edge of the counter; when there is a gathering, the cabinets roll back under the top, so the whole 12 foot top can become one big table.

The original bearing wall was replaced with a post and beam for support. To add a little interest to the space the ceiling treatment was designed for enclosed recess lighting. The ceiling treatment also has recess for solar shades.

A mix of materials was used. I wanted a simple palette that would complement our surroundings here in Penticton. We have a great view and are surrounded by huge trees, desert grass and sage and Okanagan Lake. Along the perimeter we used Plyboo dark strand (bamboo plywood) finished with clear lacquer for the doors and drawer fronts. This material is super tough and laminated in an interesting way, so I decided not to apply any edge treatments and to simply expose the edge, which was sanded and finished.

Sophisticated familyThe upper wall cabinets are finished within a frosty white lacquer. I like the idea of mixing materials; the glass door cabinets have anodized aluminum frames with an opaque gazette glass.

The counter tops are Cameo White Corian solid surface; there were a few reasons for this decision. This material is seamed together and the seams become invisible ?this is great for the big island. The solid surface material has a sanded finish which is less reflective, is a little warmer to the touch than solid stone and can be repaired if need be over time; a good thing when you have two destructive young boys.

Sophisticated familyLighting was important in a multi-use space. All of the lighting was installed with dimmable switches so you can set the mood for the evening or entertaining. The under cabinet lights are great task lighting and help show off the glass and travertine mosaic back splash. I also incorporated lighting under the island countertop and behind the stand-off panels at the front of the island. The backside of the island is custom colour, lacquered to match the post, beam and soffits. This is quite a durable kitchen, the stainless steel toe kicks help protect the bottom of the cabinets. The hard material and flat door panels with the long stainless steel pulls are easy to keep clean. The padded high back chairs are quite comfortable so we can hang out for a long time.

Make Training Work With These Simple Tips! | Love My Pets GPS ...

Your dog might be hyperactive, shy or even a bit rebellious. Whatever his personality, your furry friend needs guidance to be the best dog he can be. A training routine will establish your roles and make him more likely to obey essential commands. These small steps can help carve the path to a happier, more well-behaved dog in little time.

Once your dog begins to master the commands you are giving him, change locations. Train him in a different room of the house, on your driveway, midway on your walk, in the park. Each new location offers new distractions. He might have trouble initially offering the behaviors, but soon he?ll be able to ignore the distractions, and he will be able to focus more on listening to your commands.

A great way to potty-train your puppy is to crate-train it. A dog won?t potty where it sleeps, so keep the puppy in his crate and let him out for a potty break at regular intervals and he will go. Eventually, your pup will learn that bathroom time is outdoor time. This type of training also prevents a lot of accidents.

Make sure that your pooch is obeying commands. If Spot is ignoring you when you tell him to sit, do not give up. Follow-through until you get the action that you expect. If you are going to give up without getting the action that you requested, don?t bother giving the command in the first place.

If your dog needs more stimulation (and most dogs do), but you have limited mobility or the weather is terrible, consider other ways of keeping your dog entertained by making him work for his meals. Use his kibble as rewards for performing tasks or commands. Alternatively, you can use a toy that the dog must get the food out of!

Be sure to reward good behavior when your dog acts like you want them to. If you take the time to teach them the important things for them to know and help them build their confidence that a good dog needs, you are sure to develop a strong and healthy relationship with them.

For dogs that chew inappropriately, try a training aid like a liquid that has a strong, bitter taste. Many pet stores sell holistic products that taste terrible to most dogs. Some people choose to steep pepper flakes in water in a spray bottle instead. Either way you choose to go, a bitter or spicy deterrent on furniture, shoes, or other items that you don?t want your dog chewing or eating can stop this behavior in its tracks.

Stop bad behavior before it starts by setting up your dog?s environment to discourage bad behavior. This may mean crate-training dogs that have issues with going to the bathroom outside, or limiting access to certain rooms for dogs with destructive tendencies. No matter what route you take, your dog will be safer if his environment is suited to his quirks.

Even if your dog is extremely unruly at the moment, do not despair. Most dogs can be trained with a proper technique and a little perseverance. Make use of the tips you just read to minimize the hardship involved in training your dog while maximizing the results at the same time.

THINK YOU DON'T NEED FLOOD INSURANCE? THINK AGAIN ...

Last month, the President signed a bill extending the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for five years. This means that millions of Americans will be able to protect themselves against a risk that can cost the nation billions a year in property damage.

Petschauer InsuranceIt makes sense to consider buying this coverage. For one thing, the chances are that your Homeowners policy does not cover losses from floods. For another, about one in four NFIP claims come from areas with a low or moderate risk of flooding, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Before you make a decision, see if you?re eligible for the program: Make sure that your community meets NFIP zoning and construction guidelines for floodplain management, crafted to reduce the danger of flooding:

To determine the degree of risk in your area, go to http://www.floodsmart.gov/floodsmart/ (a site that offers a wealth of information on Flood insurance) and enter your name and address. If you live in a community with low to moderate risk, you might qualify for Preferred Risk coverage, with an annual premium as low as $129.

Bear in mind that:

  • The maximum payout under a Flood policy is $250,000 (for your building) and $100,000 (for its contents) If you need more coverage, you can purchase Excess insurance
  • After you buy a policy, there?s a 30-day waiting period before it goes into effect.
  • If you don?t have coverage for a flood loss, don?t expect a bailout from Uncle Sam. Although you might be eligible for a federal disaster assistance loan, you?ll have to repay it, with interest.

Before you make a decision on Flood insurance in NY, feel free to get in touch with us ? we?d be happy to review the pros and cons of this valuable coverage.

What to watch for at the GOP convention on Monday

Here are some things to watch for at the GOP convention Monday:

1. WHEN THE RAINS CAME: Hurricane Isaac rolls toward the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla., threatening a thicket of wet, windy disarray depending on how and where it hits. The storm is on course to pass west of the convention city.

2. WAIT 'TIL TUESDAY: Republicans announce a leaner convention schedule to begin Tuesday ? after canceling all events Monday except for a symbolic, 10-minute opening because of the approaching storm. How will a town full of eager delegates spend the day now?

3. NO BIDEN: Florida does without the nation's current vice president on Monday. Joe Biden scrapped a campaign swing through the state on account of the storm.

4. LOGISTICAL RESHUFFLINGS: Even with no formal convention events, lots of GOP luncheons and engagements are scheduled ? and some are being relocated to accommodate possible inclement weather. Among the displaced happenings: a breakfast with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and a brunch with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and House Speaker John Boehner.

5. AND AN EXTRA DAY OF ANTICIPATION: Convention delayed will not be convention denied, say some enthusiastic participants. "We're ready to blow the roofs off on Tuesday night," says Mitch Zak, media director for California's GOP delegation.

Understanding The Types Of Property Ventures With A Real Estate ...

Individuals new to the world of real estate may find it as unpredictable as any business venture. A strategy that may apply in a few circumstances may not work well with another situation. There are after all, several types of property ventures investors can engage in. Focusing on a particular choice can increase your chances of realizing a profit. A sure way to understand which type of venture will fit your preference is to join a real estate investing course. The latter will give you a deeper knowledge of residential, commercial, industrial, retail, and mixed-use property investments. Aside from residential real properties, the rest demands sufficient skill because they involve greater complexity. Mixed-use properties for instance, can involve diverse tenants from health shops to corporate offices. By attending an investment course, you will be able to assess whether or not you are comfortable with your investment decisions.

Fixing a distressed property you have just bought generally requires thorough planning. You would not want to resort to mediocre building repair contractors because you lack ample funds to back up the project. It is rare for financial institutions like banks to risk loans for property repairs since there are no guarantees that such projects would translate to returns on investment once the rehabilitated property is sold on the market. estate investing course Hard money loans in these situations are more dependable financial sources. Private lenders provide funding for property purchases as well as its rehabilitation. Borrowers should first consider several things before engaging in a contract with these lenders. Ask if there are qualifications that you have to meet to acquire the loan. Lenders may or may not call for property inspections, rehabilitation draw procedures, and credits scores. Clearing all these things overall, will ensure a win-win situation for both the lender and the borrower.

Dems challenge Koster's stance on immigration | Politics blog

From Stark

Washington State Democrats have issued a press release accusing Republican 1st District Congressional candidate John Koster of hiding from immigration issues.

The Dems note that the GOP?s platform committee has staked out a hard-line position that opposes any kind of amnesty for those who are in the country illegally, including DREAM Act measures that would show some mercy to those who were brought into the country as children. The New York Times reports.

The accusation that Koster is dodging the issue is based on his campaign?s failure to return a phone call for this Seattle Times story noting that Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna and Senatorial candidate Mike Baumgartner have attempted to move away from their party?s hard-line immigration stance.

Here?s how the Dems? press release characterizes this non-return of a phone call: ?Koster refused to answer questions about his opinion of the extreme Republican positions ??

For what it?s worth, Koster did address the immigration issue in The Bellingham Herald?s Q&A to 1st District candidates before the August primary, although he also seemed to change the subject to excessive federal regulation of agriculture. Here is our question about immigration, along with Koster?s answer and the answer from Suzan DelBene, the Democrat who took second place in the primary and is facing Koster in the November general election:

Q: Agriculture is a $290 million a year business in Whatcom County. Local farmers say their very existence could be threatened if tightened immigration restrictions deprive them of undocumented laborers, without providing them with a legal way to obtain the labor force they need. What should Congress do to address the labor problem in agriculture?

John Koster: We are a nation of immigrants. The debate and problems we have today are not about legal immigration, but illegal immigration. The debate is also a matter of national security. We must secure our borders. We are a nation of laws; therefore, we first need to enforce our existing immigration laws. I will oppose efforts to provide amnesty for illegal aliens. That being said, American farmers are fully capable of feeding this nation. Excessive governmental regulation and micro-management threatens this capability. Farmers must be left free to innovate and produce without unnecessary and intrusive regulations. As a third-generation dairy farmer, I personally feel that we need to revamp and reinstitute our ?guest worker program? that offers temporary visas for those wishing to come from other countries to work as seasonal workers.?Washington?s farmers have a need for seasonal agriculture workers. However, any guest worker program should never provide a fraudulent cover for those seeking to flout our immigration laws.

Suzan DelBene: For too long, Congress had ignored taking meaningful action to address immigration and as a result we have a flawed system that isn?t working, for immigrants, their families or employers. I support comprehensive immigration reform. Reform should include an earned path to citizenship for those who are here and working. I?m not supportive of e-verify and don?t think it?s good for our farmers or workers. What?s more, we need a legal and safe way for migrant workers to be able meet the labor demands of our agricultural industry in a way that protects workers and helps our economy thrive. Comprehensive reform has to be more than an enforcement-only policy and we must treat immigrants and their families with respect and dignity, not as second-class citizens.

Analysis: Akin row shows GOP's social-fiscal rift

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Every now and then, an event awakens the ever-slumbering tensions between the Republican Party's two core wings: social conservatives and corporate interests.

A Missouri congressman's comment about rape and pregnancy was one such moment, and it came just as Republicans were hoping for a united front at their convention to nominate Mitt Romney for president.

A full-blown rupture ? such as the one at the 1992 convention, when a defeated candidate declared a national "culture war" ? seems unlikely. But even a modest squabble between key party factions might raise concerns in a tight presidential race.

Romney joined other mainstream Republicans in denouncing the Aug. 19 remarks by Rep. Todd Akin, the party's Senate nominee in Missouri. Akin said rape victims can generally avoid pregnancy because "if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Romney called Akin's comments "offensive and wrong." He unsuccessfully urged Akin to quit the Senate race.

Like many other top Republicans, Romney stopped short of criticizing Akin's stand on abortion, as opposed to his comments about rape and conception. Akin opposes abortion in all cases, including rape.

Romney would allow abortions in instances of rape and incest. He showed no interest, however, in picking a fight with his party's most ardent abortion opponents, a crucial source of GOP votes and volunteers. And he downplayed the fact that his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, has often joined Akin in anti-abortion measures, including some that sought to differentiate between forcible and non-forcible rapes.

It's hardly surprising that Romney, who's running mainly on economic issues, is trying to maintain a quiet balance between fiscal and social conservatives. The Republican Party cannot win national elections without an alliance between the two groups.

Corporate titans know they must hold hands with anti-abortion crusaders to elect politicians who will keep government regulations and taxes low. Evangelicals and other social conservatives realize they must join ranks with business executives ? even if they would never mingle at a country club ? to elect champions of public prayer, abortion limits and so on.

Romney, who made a fortune heading the private equity firm Bain Capital, comes from the corporate wing. He seems less convincing when talking about the social issues that animate many on the right.

As Massachusetts governor, Romney supported abortion rights, gun control and gay rights. He abandoned those positions as he prepared to run for president in 2008, but many "movement conservatives" remain wary of him.

Romney had to struggle for their support during the Republican primaries, when Newt Gingrich briefly depicted him as a "vulture capitalist." Romney's most persistent rival was Rick Santorum, a hero to anti-abortion activists and home-schoolers.

Now that the primaries are over, and unaffiliated voters are crucial this fall, Republican leaders would rather keep the abortion debate to a simmer, not a boil.

Last week, the party's platform committee approved a provision that backs the "Human Life Amendment," a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban abortion, with no exceptions for rape or incest. The Republican platforms in 2004 and 2008 did the same. That might surprise some GOP-leaning centrists, who rarely hear Republican presidents or congressional leaders make loud, full-bore pushes to outlaw abortion.

"Ronald Reagan used to talk about the party's three-legged stool: fiscal conservatives, social conservatives and national-security conservatives," said Dan Schnur, a former Republican adviser who now teaches political science at the University of Southern California.

"At best, it's a three-legged stool," Schnur said. "At worst, it's three scorpions in a bottle."

The party's factions usually coexist peacefully, he said, but "the Akin matter makes it a lot harder."

The visibility and prominence of national-security conservatives have waned in recent years, partly because of widespread disillusionment with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. But business-oriented fiscal conservatives remain vitally important, as do social conservatives, who play big roles in swing states including Iowa, Florida and North Carolina.

The Akin episode ignited new tensions between the groups. Mike Huckabee, the Baptist minister and former Arkansas governor, ripped into establishment Republicans for trying to force Akin from the Senate race.

In a conference call monitored by CNN, Huckabee, who ran for president in 2008, likened the National Republican Senatorial Committee to "union goons" trying to kneecap rivals.

Romney needs as much peace between the factions as possible.

Corporate conservatives provide a disproportionate amount of funding for the GOP. Casino owner Sheldon Adelson, for instance, has pledged more than $10 million for groups opposing President Barack Obama. The wealthy industrialist brothers David and Charles Koch have donated and helped raise millions more.

Religious conservatives and anti-abortion activists, meanwhile, provide thousands of foot soldiers to knock on doors and make phone calls for candidates they support.

Akin's remarks gave Democrats new ammunition to accuse the GOP of encouraging zealots who operate on the political fringe. Democrats note, for example, that convention speakers in Tampa will include Donald Trump and others who still question whether Obama was born in the United States.

"The Akin case shows that the Republican establishment will pander to the social conservatives until they become a liability," said Democratic strategist Doug Hattaway. "But the Wall Street/country club set still rely on the right-wing religious vote to prop up the party at the polls."

Even some veteran Republican operatives question why Romney maintains ties with Trump, whom they view as a distracting glory hound.

A hard, clean break with Trump, however, might alienate a small but fervent group of conservatives who, for now, are in Romney's corner. In a presidential race that conceivably could turn on a few votes in one or two states, the loss of a tiny faction ? led by Donald Trump, Todd Akin or someone else unloved by the Republican establishment ? could prove crucial.

Raspberry Pi lands MPEG-2 and VC-1 decoding through personal licenses, H.264 encoding and CEC tag along

Raspberry Pi lands MPEG-2 and VC-1 decoding through personal licenses, H.264 encoding and CEC tag along

Making the Raspberry Pi affordable involved some tough calls, including the omission of MPEG-2 decoding. Licensing fees alone for the video software would have boosted the board's price by approximately 10 percent. Now, after many have made media centers with the hardware, the foundation behind the project has whipped up a solution to add the missing codec. For $3.16, users can purchase an individual MPEG-2 license for each of their boards on the organization's online store. Partial to Microsoft's VC-1 standard? Rights to using Redmond's codec can be purchased for $1.58. H.264 encoding is also in the cards since OpenMax components needed to develop applications with the functionality are now enabled by default in the device's latest firmware. With CEC support thrown into the Raspbmc, XBian and OpenELEC operating systems, a single IR remote can control a Raspberry Pi, a TV and other connected gadgets. If you're ready to load up your Pi with its newfound abilities, hit the source link below.

Update: The Raspberry Pi Foundation let us know that US customers won't have to pay sales tax, which means patrons will only be set back $3.16 for MPEG-2 and $1.58 for VC-1 support, not $3.79 and $1.90 for the respective licenses. We've updated the post accordingly.

Employing Sewer Contractors For Commercial And Industrial ...

Any time municipal sewer systems are installed, sewer contractors are employed to carry out the difficult task of pipeline installation. Large public works projects and developing new housing communities are extensive undertakings that call for working with skilled technical engineers and contractors.

With municipal projects, sewer main pipeline contractorsare hired by the state or county by way of a bidding process. Providers that receive contract for the project must provide evidence they have the cash flow and manpower to handle the tasks involved.

Some of the most common projects include residential construction of residential communities; new industrial development; installation of sewer pipeline in industrial and institutional establishments; and updating old sewer pipes with new.

Since most sewer pipes are setup underground, sewer companies usually employ subsurface utility engineering (SUE) companies to get 3D images of the construction site. SUE is an exceptional tool that engineers and contractors identify items hidden underground.

These technologies were primarily used by the Department of Transportation. It wasn?t until the middle of the 90?s that sewer construction firms could use methods. Since contractors can precisely identify the location of pre-existing sewer pipes and utilities they are able to determine areas that ought to be avoided during excavation and trenching. In turn, jobsite accidents and delays created by damaged pipeline can be avoided.

The operations associated with planning and installing municipal sewer systems are very sophisticated. Everything has to be carefully planned to ensure systems can meet requirements within the area. After systems are hooked up they must be inspected and undergo regular maintenance to lessen incidences of system failure.

Sewer lines must have ongoing maintenance to ensure efficient operation. Systems make use of manholes that supply access to contractors to inspect pipes or make repairs. Manholes also provide air-flow vents that let gases escape into the fresh air instead of accumulating underground.

Every sewer system device must meet guidelines mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Municipal sewer lines have to include oil and water separators to lessen the quantity of synthetic oils emitted into waterways.

Whenever there is need to hire sewer main contractors it is a good idea to invest time looking for those skilled in the sort of system involved. City and industrial projects can be extremely complex and necessitate using contractors with many years of experience.

Discoverhow employing experienced pipeline contractors can conserve cash and time at Kana Pipeline. Company founder, Daniel Locke provides pipeline industry news, educational articles and employment opportunities at KanaPipeline.com.

Watermelon Cake! ~ a Raw and Vegan Recipe for Kids!

serves about 6-8 people

?about $1.40 per serving

This is a super easy and super fun cake for any party or birthday or any day!

Just cut the watermelon into rounds. We peeled the outside with a knife and then cut the peeled melon into cake layer shaped sections.?

Then, decorate with strawberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, grapes, and kiwi. We used toothpicks to make the fruit pieces stick to the sides of the cake.

This went really well with some mango ice cream, which we made by blending frozen mango and banana chunks in the food processor.

This is our recipe video!

Happy Birthday, Alexandria!

One question that will impact your life, family and work | Some Wise ...

?Is it really that simple??

No, that isn?t the question I?m talking about, but the answer is, ?Yes, it is. However, it isn?t easy.?

flowers

I don?t think relationships are really all that complicated. Someone wise once said,

?Marriages don?t have issues. People have issues and they get married.?

I think relationships are simple, especially marriage. What they definitely are NOT is easy. Friendships, marriages and workplace relationships are easy. The situation gets dicey because people are involved.

People are not easy.

Often the most difficult person in any relationship is the one staring back at you in the mirror. I know I am. I?m selfish, short-tempered, overly sensitive, bitter, possessive and socially awkward. That is my nature.

How I choose to act is all on me. By the grace of God He guides my steps, blesses my family and gives me the ability to love sacrificially, but it?s still a choice.

I love my wife because I can?t help it. I see LK and I can?t help but smile. She walks into the room and it?s all I can do not to take her in my arms and start making out. I love her laugh and appreciate everything she does to make our house a home. But I can still be a big, selfish baby and I must choose to act against that nature.

?That?s sweet KC, but what?s this one question? You?re stalling bro.?

Fair enough, here is the question:

What can I do to help?

Imagine for a minute how you would feel if your spouse asked you this? Or your kid? What about a coworker?

Now transfer that feeling to your spouse, kid, coworker. How would they react if you asked them the same question. It?s scary to think about because you can?t ask that question with insincerity.

MEN: If you ask your wife what you can do to help and she points to the overflowing garbage can or that project you promised to finish 3 months ago you best be ready to follow through.

WOMEN: If you ask your husband what you can do to help and he asks for help with that project or a shoulder massage you?ve got to back up your offer.

MOMS/DADS: If you ask your kid(s) what you can do to help they may ask for some assistance with cleaning their room or if you can explain their homework.

This question creates an environment where we serve one another and support each other. Where needs are met and our selfish hearts are softened towards others. The focus shifts outwards to ?What can I do to help?? instead of inwards ?What can I get out of this??

Recently, I listened to Andy Stanley preach on the subject of mutual submission (a red warning light just started flashing in your brain and the alarm is blaring) and he talked about this question.

The scripture reference was Eph 5:21 where Paul is addressing the church.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

I highly recommend checking out the podcast of the sermon, but let me leave you with this challenge.

The question ?What can I do to help?? has a lot of power.

It could save your marriage.
It could strengthen your family.
It could improve your work.
It could change your life.

Asking it is the easy part. Following through is where the hard work begins.

Who do you need to ask this question to? What do you think their answer will be?
